Lot 51

A Meissen basket centrepiece from the Podewils service, circa 1741-42Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, with two putti clad in puce andtruquoise drapery supporting a pierced oval basket painted on each side with the arms of Podewils and with moulded and gilt shells around the gilt-edged rim, the inside with scattered indianische Blumen, the rockwork shaft applied with leaves and flowers and painted in shades of brown and green around the base, 32.3cm high, crossed swords mark in blue, gilt mark P., impressed 44 (basket cleanly restuck to shaft)Footnotes:Provenance:Ole Olsen Collection, Copenhagen (by 1927)Literature:H. Schmitz, Generaldirektør Ole Olsens Kunstsamlinger II (1927), p. 38, no. 1563, pl. LV;T. Iwe, Das churcöllnische Speiseservice für Kurfürst Clemens August von Köln, in Keramos 195 (2007), p. 12, ill. 5Heinrich von Podewils (1695-1760) entered Prussian service in 1720 and, together with his two brothers, was raised to the rank of Graf (Count) in 1741. He was Prussian envoy in Copenhagen and Stockholm in 1728-29, and subsequently was Prussian negotiator following the Silesian wars, signing the peace treaties of Breslau (1742) and Dresden (1745). It was probably in connection with the First Silesian War that Podewils was sent by the newly-crowned King of Prussia, Frederick the Great, on a mission to Dresden, where he arrived on 15 November 1741. Podewils himself recorded in a memoir, 'as of the end of 1741, I was posted by His Royal Majesty to the court of Dresden where, after having successfully accomplished my commission, the King in Poland most graciously made me a gift of a portrait of himself, lavishly set with diamonds, and a costly porcelain table service' (quoted in Samuel Wittwer, Liasons Fragiles: Exchanges of Gifts between Saxony and Prussia in the Early Eighteenth Century. In Cassidy-Geiger (ed.) 2007, p. 101)).The shapes for the service had been developed around the same time for the Elector Clemens August of Cologne (Hoffmeister 1999, II, no. 361), and a handful of slightly later examples with simple flower painting have also survived. Dr. Wittwer speculates (op. cit., p. 102) that the Podewils service decoration of indianische Blumen may originally have been intended for the Elector, who preferred more European flowers. The design may then have been adapted for Podewils, perhaps because the service was urgently required. Additions to the service appear to have been ordered at Meissen, and at the Berlin manufactory after Podewils' death. In a letter to Karl-Wilhelm Finck von Finckenstein, Frederick the Great wrote of Podewils after his death: 'I regret very much poor Podewils. He was a man of honour and a good citizen. The loss of such a worthy and faithful servant will always remain a sorrowful memory' (quoted in Hoffmeister 1999, II, p. 608). One hundred and sixty-three pieces from this service (including some Berlin replacements) including the present lot were in the collection of Ole Olsen, which was sold in Copenhagen between 1943 and 1953.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 95

A rare Meissen cloche (Wärmeglocke) from the 'Brühlsche Allerlei' service, circa 1745Modelled by J.F. Eberlein, of high domed from with a wavy gilt-edged rim moulded with scrollwork-edged panels of basketwork and trellis with shells and flower sprigs embellished in polychrome enamels, below a large painted pomegranate, flower spray and scattered flowers, surmounted by a rose finial, 31.5cm across; 16cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue to inside (restuck, traces of discoloured old overpainting)Footnotes:Provenance:From the service commissioned by Heinrich Graf von Brühl in 1742 and listed at his death in 1763 in his Dresden palace in the Augustusstrasse;Catalina von Pannwitz Collection, 'De Hartekamp', Heemstede, The NetherlandsThe 'Brühlsche Allerlei' service was one of the most magnificent table services made at the Meissen manufactory and is comparable in scale and ambition to the better-known Swan Service. The service has been thoroughly discussed by Johanna Lessmann, Das 'Brühlsche Allerlei' Ein Service für Heinrich Graf von Brühl, in U. Pietsch (ed.), Schwwanenservice (2000), pp. 106-123. The service originally comprised over 2000 pieces, including dinner, dessert and coffee services, and at Brühl's death in 1763, still included 145 soup plates and 269 dinner plates. Most of the modelling work on the service appears to have been done by J.F. Eberlein and J.G. Ehder, whose work records include numerous references to the service. The service included cloches (Wärmeglocken) in five different sizes, modelled mostly by Eberlein in 1745, each surmounted by a different vegetable, fruit or flower finial (the present lot is most likely the second size; see Lessmann, p. 111 and cat. no. 146). Another, of the third size, is in the Museum für Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt (U. Pietsch, Schwanenservice (2000), cat. no 146). A third, slighly larger than the present lot, is illustrated by C. Bodinek, Raffinesse im Akkord, II (2018), ill. 445a.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 223

AN EXTREMELY RARE WELSH BUCKLER, WREXHAM, CIRCA 1440-1580, with circular body of hard leather, the outer face reinforced with six concentric iron rings joined by a series of eighty-four iron panels, each radiating from the centre, widening towards the edge and fixed at each junction by a rivet with pronounced copper alloy head, the centre fitted with a low domed hollow iron boss (two small holes) drawn-out to an onion-shaped moulding with stout central spike, the interior with iron border with a loop on each side for a grip (missing) and covered over the greater part of its surface with leather reinforced with iron strips (losses, slightly warped, retained in three places by wire), 34.2 cm diameter¦¦Provenance¦D. W. Donald, Portobello Market, London, 1967¦¦Literature¦Ifor Edwards and Claude Blair, Welsh Bucklers, in, The Antiquaries Journal 62, 1982, pp. 103, Plate XVI, a. ¦¦The present buckler is one of thirty-one recorded examples made in Ruabon and Wrexham, Denbighshire from circa 1440-1580. It falls into the second of three groups described by Claude Blair who notes that the groups are based on their construction, with no evidence to suggest that any group may be assigned specific dates within this relatively broad period. Their early fame is attested to in contemporary Welsh poetry such as that of Gutun Owain (flourished 1460-1498):¦¦A picture of the sun full of rivets ¦A buckler with snowflakes or with flowers¦of steel scattered all over it.¦Fine silver dew sparkles in the splendour¦The rivets are sparks from the sun.¦Like a games table (inlaid) with fine crystal stones¦A steel frieze, a shield to excite one.¦There are steel laths in the buckler¦And three rings on top of the ribs¦Surround it and its boss hollow.¦¦The robust design of these bucklers was clearly effective and it was perhaps this that brought them to the attention of King Henry VIII who had a number made for his guard, some of which are depicted being carried by various members of his entourage in the painting ~The Field of Cloth of Gold~ preserved in the Royal Collection (RCIN 405794). Furthermore, the inventory of 1547 taken after Henry VIII~s death records ~two wreckesham Buckelers~. Other examples are preserved in the Royal Armouries Leeds (V.21, V.108, V.109), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (45.460.1), the Shrewsbury Museum (SHYMS: 1881 cat. nos. 470, 471) and at Brecon Cathedral. The most richly decorated example is preserved in the Musee de l~armee, Paris (No. I.6), it was perhaps made by Geoffrey Bromefeld, of Ruabon who was appointed ~the kinges boucler maker~ in 1530-31. It has been suggested that the Paris buckler was presented to Anne de Montmorency (1493-1567) on his visit to London in 1527 or when he met Henry VIII in France in 1532. See Edwards and Blair 1982, pp. 74-115, and Douglas Smith, Hall, Wilson and Brown (ed.) 2017, pp.38-41.¦¦Property from the Collection of a Distinguished Scholar and Collector

The two chairs interlock with the central table and do not stand on their own without it (or assumed - not tried as linked together as one two seat sofa). Both chairs have one leg each. Pins not in correctly. There are additional fixings with the chairs - unsure how this goes together. Otherwise there are scratches, dirt, etc. to the leather throughout and the same to the frames on both the chairs and tables. Both tables have dirt marks, etc. All items have general wear and tear conducive with age and use and are in need of a clean. See images for further detail.
