A George III Silver Pagoda Epergne, Thomas Pitts, London 1762, the cast base raised on four openwork scroll and foliage feet, with a lower tier of four baskets with cast scroll and foliage borders and beaded swirls to the centre, each on an acanthus capped scroll arms, with a second tier of four branches supporting pierced baskets with swing handles, the central pierced oval basket with a cast, beaded and floral border, with four ribbon tied supports for the pierced pagoda canopy, hung with eight bells and with a pineapple finial, 70cm high, 76cm wide, approx 227oz 7dwt all in For similar examples by Thomas Pitts see lot 80, Sotheby's, 6th December 2011, and also the example on display at Temple Newsam, Leeds CONDITION REPORT: Marks: fully marked to canopy and also part marked to corners of canopy with passant and maker's mark, fully marked to central bowl, three upright supports are part marked with maker's mark, swinging baskets all part marked with maker's mark and passant to base and to handle, corner dishes marked with maker's mark and passant to base rim, basket arms seemingly unmarked, corner support arms three with passant and maker's mark and one with maker's mark only, base fully marked. Marks are crisp and clear throughout Overall: detail is crisp and good. As the canopy is slightly miss-shapen it does not fit sully square on the supports. Note: the entire centrepiece has been lacquered at some point and there are some areas of tarnish throughout. Canopy: very tip of pineapple finial possibly missing. Split and old repair to small section joining top of canopy to the rest out swept part of the canopy. One of the segments with small split near the rim adjacent to a bell. Does not sit flat on a surface such as a table etc. Central basket: engraved mantling to the centre of the bowl but the crest or arms have been erased. Rest of basket good. Upright supports: each with a mark designating which hole they correspond to. Some with tarnish. Hanging baskets: Good condition Corner dishes: good condition Basket support arms: each numbered, Corner support arms: each marked with a device to locate correct corner. Base: sits flat on table or flat surface, some areas of tarnish, some tips of the downward facing canopy rounded or worn (minor).
