A George III mahogany apothecary's shop sign, lettered in gilt Hathway APOTHECARY Sells all sorts of Drugs Wholesale and Retail as Cheap as in LONDON in rococo border, 69 x 131.5cm A very rare example of an 18th century tradesman's shop sign. It owes its survival to having been re-used as a table-top until its serendipitous re- discovery in situ. It is almost certainly the sign of a Hereford apothecary, Robert Hathway. He is mentioned in the 1781 will of Martha Noble (Herefordshire Record Office, F35/RC/MII/133). An Edmund Hathway was apprenticed to John Gwillim, apothecary of Hereford, for five years, on 25 March 1791, but on stylistic grounds a post 1796 dating seems less likely than one of, say, the 1770s or '80s. We are grateful for the assistance of Mrs Dee Cook, Archivist of The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London in the cataloguing of this lot. ++Reduced slightly in size when presumably early in the 19th c adapted as the centre leaf of a dining table (lot 1010) in the present Sale.
