Plato. Dialogues of Plato [translated by Floyer Sydenham], 8 parts (of 13) in 2 vols., printed for W. Sandby, 1767-1780, general title to first vol. only, five parts with separate titles, eng. folding table, one eng. plt. with diags., vol. 1 with water-staining to first and final leaves, one or two minor closed tears, red sprinkled edges, 19th c. brown half morocco gilt, spines and returns faded, lightly rubbed in places, thick 4to. Comprising: The Banquet, parts 1 & 2; Philebus, parts 1 & 2; Meno; The Rivals (2 copies); Io; The Lesser Hippias. Floyer Sydenham (1710-1787) was a Greek scholar and a Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, who devoted himself to translating the works of Plato. His translations of the ÔDialoguesÕ were the first English translations of most of them; they were first published separately (1759-1780) and subsequently collected, and are not commonly found complete.
