It was designed specifically for the International Exhibition for Modern and Decorative Industrial Arts, held in Paris in 1925, the exhibition that launched the term 'Art Deco'. Comprising an entire dining room, all the elements designed by Wolfers (excepting the windows), the ensemble was shown in the Victor Horta designed Belgian pavilion at the exhibition. Wolfers, having previously worked in the Art Nouveau style, was influenced by the Wiener Werkstaette and Hoffmann's Palais Stoclet in Brussels; the basis for the Gioconda suite was a platter designed by Wolfers in 1923, its triangular patterning formed of intersecting decagons.
