A WILLIAM IV ROSEWOOD WRITING TABLE by John Kendell & Co, Leeds, of rounded oblong form, with plain frieze, raised on X shaped end supports, centred by a roundel and joined by a pole stretcher, each on rounded oblong platforms with applied roundels, flattened bun feet and inset brass castors, paper label Kendell No. 56196, maker`s name Riley, 30" x 19 3/4" x 29" J Kendell appears to have been active in Leeds as early as 1792, the business was described as a timber merchant and cabinet maker, and in 1816 became known as John Kendell & Co. They were employed by the Earl of Harewood at Harewood House between 1818-22 and at Farnley Hall, Otley between 1833/34 and also supplied Rudding House, Harrogate. From the 1830`s they adopted a policy of labelling their furniture. The firm was taken over by Marsh & Jones in 1863. (The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds 1986)
