A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved, pierced and painted in strong colours, to match the vibrancy of the leaf. The guards and centre gorge feature Chinoiserie figures, and swags of flowers. The double leaf features a ball game between two young men using small bats. A lady observes, a small boy sprawls on the grass to the side, and two men are present in the background. Outside a house to the right, a table is laid with refreshments. The verso is painted with a simple rural view. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm.. Rubbing to the folds. Good colour. Soiled to the verso.
The Social Gathering: An 18th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, the sticks with straight tips, the guards fitted with tortoiseshell thumb guards. The upper sections of the twenty-seven inner sticks and two guards are comprehensively carved and pierced. Centrally, a large boldly painted cartouche, bordered in gold, depicting several figures seated at the table outside a cottage, partaking of wine and a simple meal, whilst listening to a musician. To left and right, painted vignettes, in a Chinoiserie theme to complement the design in the gorge. Portraits are painted to the inner guards. The verso is a simple mirror image of the recto. Guard length approx. 8.75 inches or 22cm.Together with Another Carved Ivory Brisé Fan, this time painted with a medieval scene, with three figures within a rather sumptuously decorated room, with large paintings and extravagant hangings on the walls, the domed ceiling painted, the colours strong, as are those in the costumes being worn. The cartouche is bordered in gold. To the reserves, very Orientalist decoration with figures and blue urns, tinges of gold, some of the piercing to the sticks visible. The verso is plain, a simple mirror image outline. Guard length approx. 8.75 inches or 22cm (2) . The first fan has losses to the upper carved section of several sticks. The second fan has much the same and the ribbon is defective, sticks currently linked by thread. Some rubbing to the paint.
A Mid-19th Century Fan with deep and heavy mother-of-pearl monture, intricately carved and pierced, with no additional decoration. Centrally, a cartouche featuring two 18th century gentleman and two ladies in robes à la polonaise, the upper section cut away and backed with thin mother-of-pearl. Two side oval vignettes are carved with token of love. The double paper leaf, in dull shades of blue, depicts several groups of people undertaking various tasks or indulging in leisure pursuits. To the left, a fine gentleman seated at a table, being served a meal by a servant. Another gentleman sits with three ladies, one of whom is playing the harp. To the right, an important man wearing a ceremonial sash is attended by two others, one on bended knee. Here and there other men wearing tam o'shanters, sporrans and perhaps kilts and shawls. are in view. The verso shows a rural landscape with figures fishing in a river, habitation to the right and ruins in the background. Guard length approx. 10 and 5/8 inches or 27cm.. The verso has staining, possibly glue, and some slight loss to the leaf. Poor repair to the lower guard. The blues are more muted or perhaps faded? The recto has rubbing to the folds.
A Mid-18th Century Chinese Fan with Carved Export Monture, Qing Dynasty, the guards carved in sections on a minute scale, mainly with flowers. The gorge is carved in bands of different designs in geometric fashion. The double paper leaf, découpé, is painted with very naturalistic flowers in good colour, to include sunflowers, pansies, roses and daisies, poppies, ranunculi, and a passionflower, with butterflies arriving from the left. The verso is painted in a similar fashion with moths, heartsease, honeysuckle and soft fruits. Bears a previous auction label dated 21st October 1970. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with Another Ivory Fan With Chinese Export Monture, Qing Dynasty, figures and buildings on the guards and a very stylised and geometric design in bands and columns, a central oval with entwined initials. The light cream leaf is painted with pink roses, grapevines with fruit, and swags of flowers of the hedgerow. The upper leaf sections are embroidered with tiny silver sequins. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm; and A Third 18th Century Ivory Fan, with birds and flowers carved to the upper guards, the gorge with regular carved and pierced design formed by seven shaped and pierced bands. The double leaf features an outdoor gathering in Chinoiserie style, a meeting of generations, with an elderly man at rest, holding a large fixed fan and perhaps a scroll, watching a younger man contemplating a board game, seated at a low table with stylised porcelain flower vase. To the right, perhaps his wife, with two young children, the lady with fixed fan in hand. To the far right, a crane partaking of the orange fruits of a bush on rocky outcrop. The verso is painted with a simple gnarled tree with several colourful blooms. Guard length approx. 11.25 inches or 28.5cm (3) . The first fan upper guard is slightly warped. Losses and tears to some of the découpage. The second fan has 4 major splits to the leaf, all holding, some by virtue of some restoration seen on the verso. The third fan lacks the tip of the upper guard. Fan three has a crisp leaf but some repairs to the bottom left corner. The upper guard is fitted with an old white metal repair plate at the shoulder. Above that, another break is holding with glue. The upper section of the lower guard has an un-repaired break.
A Selection of 19th and 20th Century Accessories, to include small mid-19th century coin purse with an expanding metal frame, the body in brown crochet, and a second purse, the body of turquoise blue beads designed in swags, with looped bead fringing, fitted onto a pressed white metal frame, with short chain; a grey ostrich feather boa, c 1900, designed for close fitting to the neck; a wood brisé fan advertising the ''Liberty Bodice''; two further advertising fans advertising the business of T. Hodgson, a tailor in Lowestoft, and another advertising George Green, an outfitter in Norwich; a red paper palmette or Jenny Lind fan, the uppermost panel advertising ''La Moda Parisien'' in Madrid, with the address and phone number; and an American cardboard fixed fan or face screen, the recto showing a group of probably 1920's children at a table outdoors, accompanied by a family dog, the recto printed with advertising for ''Allen's Shoes'' in Trenton, New Jersey (8). All in good used order.
