Stadius (Johannes) Ephemerides... secundum Antwerpiae longitudinem, ab anno 1554. usque ad annum 1606, woodcut device on title and diagrams, lacks November - December 1606 at end, extensive contemporary ink notes on numerous pages, extensive worming throughout, browned, later endpapers, contemporary reverse calf, worn, covers detached, rebacked in 19th century morocco, gilt, rubbed, gilt morocco label on spine, Cologne, heirs of Arnold Birckmann, 1581; sold not subject to return.⁂ Johannes Stadius or Estadius (1527-79), Flemish astronomer, astrologer, and mathematician. He first published the Ephemerides novae et auctae in 1554. An ephemeris was, traditionally, a table providing the positions of the Sun, the Moon, and the planets in the sky at a given moment in time.

Includes geology, metallurgy, mining, mineralogy and meteorolgy, coupled with speculation on more esoteric subjects, such as the possibility of underworld inhabitants. The world map (Shirley 436) is one of the earliest to depict the movement of ocean currents with any degree of accuracy.
