The Indian Rebellion, 1857.- Ball (Charles) The History of the Indian Mutiny, 7 vol., 2 steel-engraved vignette titles and 80 plates, 2 double-page engraved maps, both with hand-colouring, double-page printed table, 3 printed titles, tissue-guards (a few damaged), some light foxing and soiling, occasional cracking at gutter with the odd leaf working loose, vol. 3 upper hinge broken, vol. 5 lower hinge broken, a few others tender but holding, original red cloth, stamped in blind and gilt, rubbed with some wear to spines, light soiling, 4to, [1858].

'To the reader' only, main text and table complete, small area of marginal worming to first c.100pp., or so, some spotting or staining, a few tears, contemporary blind-ruled calf, sympathetically rebacked, gilt spine in compartments, corners repaired, some worming, rubbed and scuffed, [STC 7227], Printed by H[umphrey] L[ownes] for Mathew Lownes, 1613; and 2 defective 17th century editions of Sydney's Arcadia, small folio (3) sold not subject to return. ⁂ Provenance: David Garnett (1892-1981), Hilton Hall, Huntingdon, English writer, publisher and member of the Bloomsbury Group. As a child wore a cloak made of rabbit skin, earning him the nickname 'Bunny'. He received literary recognition when his novel Lady into Fox, an allegorical fantasy, was awarded the 1922 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction (engraved armorial bookplate).
Africa.- Ethiopia.- Ludolf (Hiob) A new history of Ethiopia. Being a full and accurate description of the kingdom of Abessinia, second edition in English, 9 engraved plates (including 'An Ethiopic Alphabet'), of which 8 folding, folding letterpress genealogical table, lacking folding map, first 2 ff. loose and little chipped, plate at p.58 with small abrasion and repaired tear, some foxing, mostly lightly browned, occasional staining, a few short tears, 19th century half calf, worn, but holding firm, [Wing L3470], folio, Printed for Samuel Smith bookseller, at the Princes Arms in St. Paul's Church yard, 1684. sold not subject to return. ⁂ Hiob Ludolf (1624-1704) German philologist and historian; described by Edward Ullendorff as 'the most illustrious name in Ethiopic scholarship'.

* ETHEL WALKER (SCOTTISH b. 1941), BRIGHT SPRING FLOWERS oil on board, signedframed and under glassimage size 46cm x 50cm, overall size 67cm x 72cm Comment: probably a relatively early work by Ethel Walker and another exceptional example following several outstanding paintings by Walker to feature in our auctions over the last couple of years.Note: Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1941. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021 "The Silver Table" (lot 562), a mixed media by Ethel Walker sold for £2600 (hammer). In our December 2021 auction "The Lace Cloth" achieved £3000 (hammer) and "Study in Blue" sold for £2400 (hammer) in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th December 2022 (lot 16).

An Art Deco silver dressing table/vanity set with stylised engine turned decoration. Circular empty cartouche to hand mirror, brush and glass pot. Comb handle (comb missing) has and engraved 'M' in cartouche. Some age related denting. Glass vanity pot approx. 7cm tall x 6.5cm diameter, mirror approx. 27cm long. Each piece fully hallmarked.
2 early 20th century silver topped glass dressing table vanity pots with holes to lids. Both with faceted glass pots. Smaller has engraved detail to glass and hallmarked for London 1915 (small chip to underside of pot), larger has engraved monogram to lid and hallmarked for B'ham 1911 (approx. 8cm tall x 6.5cm diameter). Both pots have age related denting.
A ceramic Asprey teapot made exclusively for KIDS Charity Gala evening 2003. Designed by Peter Ting for Asprey using drawing from KIDS play sessions, and limited to only 50 pieces. These were placed on each table at the event and auctioned off to the highest. Complete with a copy of the Gala Evening Programme with written provenance for the teapot. Approx. 12cm tall x 29cm tall.
A Mid century Ercol drop leaf dining table together with a set of 4 Ercol dining chairs. Unmarked oval shaped table with cross frame support and splayed legs. Metal tubular supports to underside for leaf supports. Chairs with fleur de lis design to backs, each stamped with BS mark to underside and dated 1960. Table top approx. 124cm x 113cm when extended, approx. 65cm wide with leaves down.
