Robert Lutyens [1901-1972]- An Australian black bean wood side-table for Reuters, Fleet Street, London,: the rectangular top with moulded frieze raised on six square section reed led leg , united by double cross frame stretchers, terminating on double block feet, 152.5 x 82.8cm.* Notes. Robert Lutyens (1901-1972) was the son of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens (1866-1944). He formed a partnership with Harold Greenwood (1904-1972) who had worked in the design office of Edwin Lutyens. Robert Lutyens designed many of the interiors of the homes of several board members of Marks & Spencers.* Notes The Reuters & Associated Press Building, 85, Fleet Street London was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) and constructed between 1934 -1938. The decision on choosing furniture for the conference room was placed on hold during the Second World War. In 1947 Mr .R A Henderson of the Sydney Morning Herald proposed the making of furniture for the Conference room as a gift from The Australian Associated Press to Reuters in London in appreciation for their joining of the Reuters Partnership. Plans for a boardroom table, four small tables and thirty chairs (see following lot) were drawn up by Robert Lutyens in 1948 with the choice of wood being chosen by the Australian Associated Press and subsequently constructed in Australia before being delivered to Reuters in London in 1949.* Provenance This table and chairs were acquired in the 1970s when the interior was modernised.
