Arnhem, Operation Market Garden - a Second World War Group of Five Medals, comprising 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, International Prisoners of War Medal with box of issue, swing mounted as worn, and The Battle of Arnhem Bridge to the Future 1944-1994 commemorative medal, awarded to 3191891 Sergeant John George Nattrass (George), 15th Platoon, D Company of the 7th King's Own Scottish Borderers and 1st British Airborne Division, together with Paratrooper's enamel lapel badge, Pegasus enamel lapel badge, National Prisoner of War Association enamel lapel badge, a related First Day Cover, various mixed badges, a wood plaque showing the Nattrass tartan and crest, a book "Door De Hel Van Oosterbeek 1944" which was the recipient's published account of the battle written and signed by Nico J Van der Meer, a book "Off At Last" in which George is mentioned on pages 108 & 114, photographs and related ephemera, also a table knife, fork and spoon engraved "SEPT.17 1944 DREŸEROORD GEORGE NATTRASS" presented to him by the owner of the Hotel Dreijeroord known by all as "The White House"Footnote:- George Nattrass was with 1st British Airborne Division when they were instructed to land in Arnhem, capture and hold the strategically important highway bridge, and hold the Germans at bay. On the 17th September 1944, George and his colleagues flew over to Holland in a glider and landed at Reijerskamp, near Wolfhese which was about 13 kilometers away from the bridge. They set off towards Oosterbeek and found themselves in the gardens of Hotel Dreijeroord which later became known as the White House and was to become the battalion headquarters. Fierce fighting with the Germans ensued and the British suffered many casualties. The King's Own Scottish Borderers battalion was reduced from 890 to 90 exhausted and hungry men and George was the only remaining senior sergeant left. On the 24th September, 26 year old George was unfortunately shot in the arm and leg by a German sniper and was subsequently captured and sent to Stalagg 11B, a Prisoner of War camp in Germany and then to Stalagg 357, where he remained until the end of the war.

A 19th century inlaid mahogany serpentine fronted dressing table mirror, with oval glass. Height 61 cm, width 42 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This dressing table mirror is stable on its four feet. The mirror itself moves within its mounting. The three frieze drawers all run smoothly. There are losses to this mirror where veneer has in places cracked. Also beading along the top left edge is missing. There is wear, indentations and small losses to the bracket feet. Scratches and some damage to the top surface. The mirror itself is blistered and discoloured in places.

CONDITION REPORT: The table is structurally sound and is free from any breaks or repairs. There are minor surface marks to the top. The top is not warped.
