FRODSHAM./ MAKER TO THE QUEEN./ 84 STRAND, LONDON., above a trefoil moulded base, all raised on squat gilt feet, with a fusee movement and original key signed FRODSHAM/ LONDON 33.5cm wide, 46cm high Note: Charles Frodsham (1810-1871) was one of the most significant and finest makers of clocks, watches and chronometers of the 19th century. He was born into a dynasty of horologists and was apprenticed to his father, William, at the age of 14. He started his own business in 1834, and expanded the company after purchasing John Roger Arnold's business following Arnold's death. Frodsham's company were well known for making some of the best carriage clocks during the 1800s, and during the latter part of the 19th century, for their time-precision regulator clocks. This particular clock is unusual for being a table regulator; Frodsham's were largely known for making floor-standing regulators for observatory use, and wall clocks for domestic purposes.
