World War II - Allied Victory in Italy. A photograph album recording the German field surrender at 15th Army Group HQ near Florence, May 1945, the series of 12 photographs appearing at the end of an album containing a further 96 gelatin silver print photographs, arranged chronologically from 1941-45 on 15 stiff card leaves and back to back, beginning with the compiler's wedding at St. Leonard's, Exeter in 1941, family snapshots, photographs of radio operation and listening for intelligence at Gothic House, before being appointed as a war correspondent in September 1944 and going from there to Italy, views, aircraft and army personnel, the final two leaves devoted to the 12 unique photographs (mostly 8.5 x 8cm) obtained by him with manuscript captions to mounts in silver pencil, including a group photograph of Truscott, McCreery, Major Mark Clark and General Morgan, photographs including the German General, General Clark handing over the surrender orders, and after the official surrender German and Allied representatives adjourning to G-3 War Room for fuller discussion with Germans on one side of the table and Allied officers on the other side and finishing with caption 'Victory in Italy. The Germans take orders from the Allies', contemporary limp cloth with spine tie and Egyptology motifs to upper cover, oblong folio A remarkable album recently discovered by descendents of the photographer. Though dated May 1945, these photographs would seem to pre-date the official signing of the first instrument of surrender at Caserta near Naples on 29 April 1945. This surrender in 'woods near Florence' would seem to pre-date this historic first signing and the photographs are potentially the only photographic record of this first instrument of German field surrender. This would imply that they were part of a longer set of stools. A sale of some of the contents of Latimer House was held by the 4th Lord Chesham at Sothebys on 30th Nov. 1945, however it has not been proven to date that any other stools from the set were offered on that date. The design of these stools relates to the Wentworth Woodhouse giltwood suite supplied by Gillows in 1832 to the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (also stamped HH . See Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Antique Collectors Club, 2008, page 243 (vol. II). The legs of the stools also relate to an earlier pier table, ibid, page 85, plates 630 and 631(vol. II) For other comparisons see pages 227, 229, 291, 321(vol.I). In further support of these stools having been made in Gillows workshop, the stretcher rails of both lots are stamped H H twice. According to Susan Stuart s book (page 244, vol.II) H H is one of the most common initial stamps on Gillow s chairs made during the first half of the 19th century. One set of twenty four chairs sold at Mere Hall, Cheshire (Christie s 23.5.1994) were inscribed with the firms name and in particular one chair inscribed H Howard W Yates Brook/ Mere in addition to the H H stamp suggest that HH could be Henry Howard, however Henry Holmes is said to be a better candidate as he was a known. It is possible that these stools were made for the remodelling of Burlington House in the early 19th century by the 1st Earl of Burlington. His son, the 1st Lord Chesham, moved out of Burlington

A pair of George III mahogany side tables, circa 1800, each rectangular top with ebony stringing, above a frieze drawer with cast lion mask handles, on square section tapering legs, 78cm high, 103cm wide, 54cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, Worcestershire Provenance: Probably originally the Earl of Plymouth, thence purchased at different times by the current vendor. The first table was purchased in 1948 from Mrs Maxwell of Maxwell Antiques in Ludlow. Mrs Maxwell stated that the table had been purchased from the Earl of Plymouth at Oakly Park, just outside Ludlow. The matching table was purchased at auction around 1970, The table had been included in the auction by a Mr Beckley, a farmer from Bradley Green, near Hewell Grange. Hewell Grange and a lot of the surrounding land and farms had belonged to the Earls of Plymouth until 1947, at which point it had been sold to the government. It therefore seems quite possible that the table was purchased at the dispersal sale of the contents of Hewell Grange. This theory would therefore explain the link between Oakly Park and Hewell and the likely original location of the pair of tables. Oakly Park was purchased by Clive of India in the second half of the 18th century and, although it is not certain that he ever lived here himself, the property has remained in the family through six generations since that time. Major General Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive, (29 September 1725 - 22 November 1774), also known as Clive of India was Commander in Chief of British India.

Lot 67

The bold use of swags of marquetry bellflowers alongside exotic timbers also demonstrates similarities to the work of John Cobb. Thomas Chippendale supplied a related table, veneered in tulip and rose woods, for Nostell Priory, Yorkshire and invoiced it in 1766 as: A Lady s commode writing table made of tulip and rosewood with a slider cover d with Green Cloth 5.14.0 (C.
