Malcolm Appleby 'Wild Bowl', Edinburgh, 2008 Sterling silver Hand engraved Approx. 43.0 x 45.5 x 9.6cm Approx. weight 93.8oz (ARR) Provenance The Hamme Collection Footnote Malcolm Appleby is widely considered one of the most highly skilled craftsmen working in Britain today. A unique and exceptionally gifted silversmith, he is particularly renowned for his engraving work, for which he has been described as 'a genius' by John Andrew (Founder and Curator of the Pearson Collection). In 2014, Appleby received an MBE for his outstanding contribution to the arts and services to hand engraving. Prized for its outstanding originality, his inventive work can be found in numerous private and public collections including: The Victoria & Albert Museum, National Museums Scotland, The Goldsmiths' Company Collection and The Art Gallery of Western Australia. Public commissions include a sculptural table piece for Bute House, a cruet set for 10 Downing Street and the orb of the coronet for the investiture of King Charles with the title of Prince of Wales in 1969. Malcolm Appleby initially named this one-off bowl 'Life Force'. The piece was engraved flat and formed afterwards, using wooden tools; a mix of hammer and chisel engraving and hand push engraving. It was part of a much larger sheet of engraved silver that he cut up to make three bowls. This was the largest one. An alternative title that he considered was 'Beginning a New Life', but, in the words of the artist, all such titles 'are arbitrary'.
