Adrian Gerald Benney (1930-2008). A Elizabeth II silver gilt and enamelled table jewellery casket, the lid with two bands of white enamel and a central stripe of blue striated enamel, with piano hinge, the sides having textured bark finish and the interior lined with antelope skin, stamped GERALD BENNEY, LONDON to the plain foot enclosing a textured base, London 1972. 6.6cm H, 20.5cm W, 10.5cm D, 50.5oz all in. Gerald Benney was born in 1930 in Hull to artistic parents. He went to Brighton College of Art 1946-8 (his father was Principal) where he trained as a silversmith in the workshop of Dunstan Pruden at Ditchling. After military service he attended the Royal College of Art 1950-53 and was later Professor of Silversmithing and Jewellery from 1974 to 1983. In 1953 he secured a workshop from the retiring owner Mr. S W Ide, the best gold-plater in London, at Whitfield Place off Tottenham Court Road. In 1958 he was made a Freeman of the Goldsmith's Company. 1964 elected a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. In 1969 he moved his London studio to Falcon Wharf, Bankside and by 1973 was at warehouses in Bear Lane, Southwark. With the increase in VAT on luxury goods in 1974 he had to let most of his 19 staff go and moved everything to Beenham House, his home in Berkshire, where he stayed until 1998. From 1957-1969 Benney was Consultant Designer to Viners of Sheffield. In 1971 he became a Royal Designer for Industry. He had one man exhibitions at Goldsmith's Hall in 1973, enamels in 1994 and in 2005. From 1974-1980 he received 4 Royal Warrants of appointment. He was appointed Professor at the Royal College of Art from 1974-1983. In 1993 his son Simon opened the showroom Benney in Walton Street. Benney stated "My philosophy as such is to project and involve my own personal design theme without too much reference to others in the field."
A George III mahogany dressing table mirror, with turned supports, bevelled rectangular plate and bowfront face with three oak lined drawers with brass drop handles on ball feet, decorated throughout in the neo-classical style with bell husks on a green painted faux hare wood band and floral garlands to the drawers, being Tudor rose and rhododendron centred with lilies and tuberose to the sides, 58cm H, 60cm W, 25cm D.

Morant, George, London, interior decorator, cabinet maker, carver and gilder (1790-1839). In 1790 he founded a well-known firm of decorators and cm. His earliest bill-heads appear to date from the beginning of George IV's reign, when he described himself as 'Ornamental Painter and Paper-hanging Manufacturer to their Royal Highnesses the Dukes of Sussex and Cambridge, No.88 New Bond Street, London. House Painting and every article in the Gilding Line.' The firm's Bond St shop front was designed by John Buonarotti Papworth, 1817-19, and the business was style George Morant & Son, 1825-39. Messrs at the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign, on the recommendation of the Duchess of Gloucester. Morant took out a Sun Insurance Policy on 15 March 1824 for £5,200 including £1,000 on household goods in house, workshops and warehouse communicating with house in tenure of a tailor, and with a house and store at 4 Wood St; and £4,200 on drawings, engravings and pictures. [D;Colvin;PRO, LC3/60;GL, Sun MS vol.495, ref. 1014866] Between 1820-22 Morant decorated Farnborough Hill and a small house adjacent to it at Farnborough, called the Pavilion for Mrs Luke Foreman, widow of a wealthy merchant. His bills for paper hanging survive, and he appears to have supplied much of the furniture. [DEF] G.Morant & Sons, u, supplied furnishings for Wynyard Park, Co. Durham, for Charles William Vane, Marquess of Londonderry, c.1823-34. [Durham RO, Londonderry papers, D/LO/E 492] In 1833 the firm submitted a bill to the Duke of Sutherland for 'papering & colouring' at Bridgewater House, costing £584 2s 11d. In 1837 they charged £1,766 and £280 for work at Stafford House, and in 1838, £450 for furniture supplied there. [Staffs. RO.D/593/R/2/13/20;R/1/26/26] Payments are recorded to.Morant by the 6th Earl of Cardigan for Deene Park, Northants. [C. Life, 1 April 1976, p.811] The stamp of Morant's is recorded on Boulle pieces at Mamhead, Devon, to which the firm supplied the state bed for Queen Adelaide's visit in 1838. [C. Life, 2 June 1955; Conn., June 1977, pp.144-45] The firm also supplied furniture to Melford Hall, Suffolk, for Sir William Parker. [Nat. Trust Studies, 1981, p.72].

A late Victorian Sheraton revival satinwood and marquetry display cabinet, with a pierced brass gallery to the break front upper cabinet, with two glass shelves and enclosed by a single bevel glazed door, stepped table base with classical urn and scroll inlay to the top and single drawer within outlines of stringing, the drawer stamped 64775, on slender tapered legs and spade feet with lower cut away platform, 135cm H, 77cm W.
A Victorian figured walnut Bonheur du Jour, the central cupboard enclosed by a single mirrored door and with gallery top, flanked by six shallow drawers having canted corners and all with scroll marquetry inlay, the table base with serpentine front and writing pad, fitted with a drawer, on tapered legs, with cast and pierced ormolu handles and mounts in the French taste, 125cm H, 104cm W, 62cm Dia.

An early Victorian mahogany library table by John Thompson of Durham, with green skiver top the frieze having six drawers with oak and marbled paper linings, over a beaded moulded support on four tulip carved and taper turned legs on a quatrefoil platform with beaded moulding and raised on carved paw and scroll feet, marked to the underside John Thompson Cabinet Maker, 41 New Street, Durham, March 11 1858. 75cm H, 153cm D.John Thompson Cabinet Maker is known to have subscribed to Sheraton's Drawing Book in 1793, and The Cabinet Directory in 1803. He advertised in the Newcastle Courant for one or two hands stating 'None but good workmen need offer'. He retired in 1819 transferring the business to his sons.
