In twentieth century Tibet Western and Chinese style chairs were not used, with the exception of the upper echelons of society. Most people sat on cushions on the floor, apart from lamas who sat on cushions raised on wooden platforms. Similarly, monks sat on cushions on the floor when teaching. Chogtse were used for the pecha, a Tibetan sacred text, that was used during the ceremony. Of course they were also used for cups of tea, tea being drunk throughout the day in both monastries and private dwellings.
