A 'Cabinet of Friendship' two-handled loving cup, printed in blue and picked out with coloured enamels, decorated on one side with a scene of men meeting around a table with an inset clasped hands symbol, titled above 'The real Cabinet of Friendship', and on the reverse with a repeated biblical scene inscribed 'Every one helped his Neighbour & said to his Brother be of good Cheer', height 17.1cm, unmarked, circa 1825-35 (fine interior glaze crack) The origin of the phrase 'The Cabinet of Friendship' is not clear but it was used for the title of an 1834 tribute to the memory of the late John Aitken, Editor of 'Constable's Miscellany'; the biblical quote appears to be based on 'They helped everyone his neighbour; and everyone said to his brother, Be of good courage.' (Isaiah 41:6)
