ERNEST GIMSON (1864 - 1919): AN OAK AND SYCAMORE DINING TABLE, the two plank sycamore top united by seven butterfly joints, the square legs joined by a chamfered variant of a `hay-rake` stretcher with exposed through-tenon, 72"" wide. Provenance: A wedding present from Ernest Gimson to his nephew Harold Gimson on his marriage to Marjorie in 1915, and thence by descent until 2006. The row of `butterfly` or `double dovetail` joints which secure the two planks of Sycamore that form the top of this table are both functional and decorative. An identical use of these joints can be seen on the fine walnut and Macassar ebony dining table designed by Gimson at the same date which is now in the collection at Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery. This table and the joints are illustrated on page 97 of Carruthers and Greensted `Good Citizen`s Furniture, 1994. The typically `Cotswold School` stretcher with flattened profile and chamfered edges is characteristic of Gimson`s work at this date and the links to the traditional carts and farm implements that Gimson and his colleagues were inspired by are clear. The addition of the rising `wishbone` support that joins the stretcher with a cross rail beneath the sycamore top makes this an unusual version of the more familiar heavily jointed `hay-rake` stretcher. Functional as well as highly decorative, this feature typifies the unique contribution made by Gimson and Ernest and Sidney Barnsley to furniture design at the beginning of the twentieth century.
