For a similar model of table by Gillows, see Christie’s London, Important English Furniture and Carpets, 23rd November 2006, Lot 138 (£9,600). Gillows supplied two related dressing-tables to William Powlett, 2nd Baron Bolton (d. 1850) for Hackwood Park, Hampshire in 1813.

HINDLEY & SONS 134 OXFORD STREET LONDON, 79cm high, 92cm wide, 48cm deep In 1844 Hindley & Sons, rug and floor cloth makers of 32 Berners Street, purchased the successful cabinet making firm of Miles & Edwards and moved into their premises at 134 Oxford Street. This gave them the capacity to produce furniture of the highest quality and they became one of the elite group of London cabinetmakers with Royal appointments who exhibited at the Great Exhibition Provenance: Private Collection, North Yorkshire.

A French opaque-white glass, enamelled and gilt part dessert service, mid 19th century, decorated by Francois Robert (ainé Sèvres) for Maison Launay Hautin & Cie, painted with flowers within turquoise and gilt borders in the Sèvres manner, comprising: ten plates, 23.5cm diameter and four stands, iron-red printed mark Francois Robert was a decorator at Sèvres from 1807 to 1843. In 1837 he patented a glass decorating and left the porcelain works to set up a workshop nearby for decorating table and decorative glass and windows. The same year he became the official decorator for Launay, Hautin et Cie, the agents for the Bercy, Choisy, Baccarat and St. Louis glass works. Clearly his decorating style owes much to his original employer.
