RARE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE TABLE CABINET, late 16th century, with a hinged lid enclosing a mirror plate and a pull-down front revealing an architectural interior mounted with shells and painted in polychrome and gilt with flowers, pseudo-armorials and scrollwork, the exterior with conforming decoration on a black ground, 31cm wide x 28.5cm high Provenance: A noble West Country collection. This remarkable cabinet was probably made in Venice circa 1580. The painting and gilded decoration is imitating Middle Eastern ornament, which emphasises the strong trade links between these two areas throughout the 16th century. A dressing case with comparable decoration is illustrated in "At Home in Renaissance Italy" published by the V & A and edited by Marta Ajmar-Wollheim and Flora Dennis, London 2006, pg. 60, pl. 3.11, and another illustrated on pg. 178, pl. 13.5.
