George Cattermole (British, 1800 - 1868) An early 17th Century gathering of gentlemen men around a dimly lit table negotiating amongst themselves, with a central figure overseeing affairs, his back to the viewer, while a female servant attends a lavishly dressed figure, his hat cast dismissively on the floor at his feet, oil on canvas, in gilt slip and gilt moulded frame, 52 cm x 43 cm sight size [Cattermole was a British painter and illustrator, chiefly in watercolours. He was a friend of Charles Dickens and many other literary and artistic figures - collaborating on illustrations for The Olde Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. At the Paris Exhibition of 1855 he received one of the five first-class gold medals awarded to British painters. He also enjoyed professional honors in Amsterdam and in Belgium.]
