THE.DUCK.AND.FFRVSTRATE.ALL THERE/ENEMIES, above a domed foot engraved with fruiting vine, 27.2cm, 10.75in, the foot broken and partly repaired with a white metal mount to the rim, By family repute the present lot belonged to Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (1667-1747) of Inverness. Lovat was a close supporter of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, during the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 and after Culloden was executed following a notorious trial in London in 1747, However, it is far more likely that the glass was acquired by Simon Fraser, 15th Baronet Lovat, at the end of the 19th century. A similar goblet engraved with an equestrian portrait of William III and an extensive inscription, illustrated by J.Bles, Rare English Glasses of the XVII and XVIII Centuries, is discussed at length in the catalogue, 'Irish Williamite Glasses' (Ulster Museum, Belfast), pp.8-9, pls.1V(c) and V(d). It appears to have been engraved by the same hand, possibly Franz Tieze (see P.Francis, 'Franz Tieze (1842-1932) and the re-invention of history on glass', The Burlington Magazine, May 1994, pp.291-302), Provenance, Simon Fraser, 18th Lord Lovat and thence by descent
