Ye-Family rock crystal snuff bottle, painted at the Apricot Grove Studio, Beijing in 1940, painted on one side with two mounted warriors in a landscape, the reverse with a general and his staff at a table. This bottle is unusual in that it is painted in a very well carved old rock crystal snuff bottle dating from 1770-1850, rather than inside a purpose-made glass bottle. The Ye Family, consisted of Ye Zhongsan the Elder and his three sons, who painted over a period of more than 60 years at the Apricot Grove Studio and always signed their bottles in the Father's name. This bottle could have been painted by any one of the family, including the Elder Ye (who died in 1940) but its superior quality of brushwork points to the most accomplished of the sons, Ye Bengqi, who was at the height of his powers between 1925-1945. Originally from the collection of Margaret Prescott Wise.
