A young lady dancing for the ruler in his bedchamber, Oudh, Mughal India, circa 1780, opaque pigments on paper heighted with gold, the scene under an orange canopied bed with bejewelled supports within a palace interior, the young lady wears a blue dress edged with gold and is held by an older woman wearing European dress, the ruler clasps a pink cushion under one arm, presumably to offer the lady as he pulls her near to him, with two similar cushions behind him, a gem-set gold huqqa on a raised stand and a table upon which an array of delicately drawn fruits in gold vessels sit are by his side, groups of elegant courtesans surround the scene, five fountains to the foreground, within a gold outer border, painting 31 x 23.7 cmProvenance: Private collection Germany formed in the late 1960sCondition Report: Losses to gold border particularly to right side, bottom right corner with loss to paint and tear to paper, warping
To be Sold without ReserveWomen on a terrace, possibly an illustration from a Ragamala: Dipak Raga, Oudh, Mughal India, circa 1775, opaque pigments on paper heightened with gold, a scene on a terrace by moonlight, a lady richly attired in gold jama and scarf beckons to her attendant to bring her some wine, a gem-set gold table at her feet with vessels, her attendants behind seem to be very sleepy, and her musician appears to be resting perhaps due to the late hour, within border of gold flowers, 25.6 x 20.2cm.
