Fifteen-course chitarrone or theorbo, Italian, 17th century and later, the body of thirty ebony ribs divided by ivory purfling, the later table pierced by triple roses carved and pierced with floral scrollwork, the tie bridge probably also later, the underside of the later primary neck overlaid with ebony and ivory bands in a chevron form, both this and the secondary neck edged with ivory, the fingerboard with a central ebony panel inlaid in ivory with scrolling foliage inhabited by exotic birds and animals within an ivory frame, with six double courses of strings and one single chanterelle course over the fingerboard and eight single diapason strings running clear of the fingerboard, the secondary peg box doubling back on itself, fitted with two later ivory brackets for the carrying sling Inscribed on an overlaid ivory plaque below the secondary peg box Martin Kaiser fecit Venatus Anno 1609 Overall length 77?in, 196cm; body length 22?in, 58.3cm; primary string length 34in, 86.4cm; diaphason string length 67¼in, 170.8cm *This instrument bears certain similarities to a theorbo in the Musée de Musique, Paris (inv. No. E-24), in particular the inlay on the back of the primary neck. The Paris instrument is accepted as being the work of Martin Kaiser. It is labelled internally and is also dated 1609 (see Centre Animation Expression Loisin, Musique Ancienne, No. 16/17, September 1983, p. 65, 'Description des Luths de la Collection du Musée C. N. S. M. II' by Joêl Dugot). It can be speculated that whoever worked on this theorbo may have been familiar with the Paris instrument. In her inventory of known guitars by the Voboam family it is listed as J-B3. Until recently it was on loan to the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague
