A Regency rosewood and brass inlaid library table attributed to GillowsCirca 1820, with line-inlay, the gilt tooled leather inset top above six short opposing mahogany-lined frieze drawers, with stylised foliate strapwork inlaid angles, on vertical end supports headed with scrolled foliate corbels, terminating in scrolled scallop shell capped and acanthus carved lion paw feet with recessed brass castors, with a ring turned baluster cross stretcher, 168cm wide x 99cm deep x 74cm high, (66in wide x 38 1/2in deep x 29in high)Footnotes:An early Gillows model of end support comparable to that on the present table, with its opposing upper and lower scrolled corbels combined with paw feet, can be found on a design for one of two rosewood sofa tables made for John Gladstone Esq. This drawing which appears in the Estimate Sketch Books, dated 13 April 1813, is also illustrated in S.E. A late Victorian antelope horn and oak occasional table made and retailed by Rowland WardCirca 1900, the dished circular top on three antler horn supports, terminating in three conforming legs with ball feet, the underside with a paper label inscribed: 'The Jungle, Rowland Ward, 186 Piccadilly, Trademark' and with a brass plaque stamped: '9021', 42cm wide x 41cm deep x 86cm high, (16 1/2in wide x 16in deep x 33 1/2in high)Footnotes:James Rowland Ward (1848-1912), who formed part of a family with a background in taxidermy, was one of the most prominent figures operating within this field during the last quarter of the 19th century, and even into the Edwardian period. Ward's taxidermy shop located in Piccadilly, which was often referred to as 'The Jungle', was arguably the most widely renowned in the British Empire for making and selling a great variety of functional items made from birds, horns, feathers, tusks, big game trophies, animal skins and tusks.
