(JUDAICA) 'RED AND GLOWING IS THE EYE OF THE JEW' Scarce German book: 'Rot und gluhend ist das Auge des Juden' ('Red and glowing is the eye of the Jew'), by Arno Nadel (1878-1943), German Jewish poet and musicologist, and Jakob Steinhardt (1887-1968), Israeli artist and engraver of Polish and Jewish extraction. (Berlin: Verlag für Judische Kunst und Kultur Fritz Gurlitt), 1920. 25pp. 9 1/2 x 11 3/4 in., with eight tipped-in plates and a facsimile of a music score. Striking woodcut on front cover showing an elderly Jewish man with a boy before a table with two candles. An attractive work, delicately and sensitively illustrated with images of Jews at prayer. Some soiling and wear to margins on cover, else very good. Especially poignant in that in November 1938, Arno Nadel was sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Although he was lucky enough to get papers to leave for England, he was too frail to make the trip. In March 1943, he and his wife were deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp. He died there the same year.
GERMAN SHOOTING FEDERATION TABLE MEDAL Unissued cased Deutscher Schutzen-Verband bronze medal, 4 in. diameter, issued to 'THE VICTOR' and showing a rearing stallion beside oak leaves and above a national eagle and swastika, and the organization's logo, The reverse reads (in English): 'HONOR PRIZE OF THE GAUES WESTPHALIA IN THE GERMAN SHOOTING ASSOCIATION'. Fine, in a fine fitted case.
A superlative Adolf Hitler relic, a fine 25 x 25 in. linen napkin in the 'floral and ribbon' pattern, with a stunning, raised and embroidered national eagle and swastika flanked on either side by Hitler's initials 'A H', the embroidered eagle measuring 1 3/8 x 1 in. overall. The floral and ribbon pattern is discreetly woven into napkin, which in all is a very high-quality piece of table linen, the finest that Hitler used. Very fine condition. This important relic was discovered at Hitler's private office in Munich (the 'Fuhrerbau') by Lt. John L. McConn, Jr. in the spring of 1945. McConn was in command of a detachment of soldiers ordered to occupy and guard the building, and McConn himself slept only a few doors from Hitler's office, where the Munich Pact had been signed seven years earlier. In exploring the building, McConn's men found a trove of Hitler's personal effects in the basement of the building, stored there to prevent damage from the incessant bombing by Allied forces. Among the items uncovered were mother of pearl and gold inlaid presentation lugers, an enormous gold and ruby ring, and most importantly, a huge collection of Hitler's purchased and stolen art intended for display in the never-constructed Fuhrermuseum. As did all soldiers, McConn wanted to return home with souvenirs from his service in Europe, and he found this napkin in the Fuhrerbau where it would have been used by Hitler and only a very small group of his closest advisors and top generals. McConn also mailed home the famous Munich Pact Desk Set - offered by us elsewhere in this sale. Sold with a copy of McConn's May 6, 1945 letter home to his parents, written on Hitler's private stationery found in his office.
ADOLF HITLER FORMAL TABLE NAPKIN RING Fine original formal silver napkin ring from Adolf Hitler's personal formal silverware set, 1 3/4 in. tall, 1 1/2 in. diameter, bearing a large embossed Nazi eagle and swastika device, the swastika flanked by Hitler's initials 'A H' at bottom. On the opposite side the rings bear the hallmarks of silversmiths Bruckmann. Some light tarnishing, else fine condition. The Bruckmann 'formal pattern' of silver flatware and tableware was made as a 50th birthday present to Hitler from Albert Speer. There are believed to be six complete sets of 500 pieces, or possibly five sets of 600 pieces, and they were distributed among the places Hitler frequented the most: the 'Berghof' (Hitler's mountain home); 'Der Adlerhorst' (the Eagle's Nest); the 'Gasthaus' (Guest House) at Obersalzberg: the 'Braune Haus' (the 'Brown House'); the 'Prinzregentenplaz' apartment in Munich; and the 'Reichskanzlei' in Berlin.

LUSITANIA TABLE ASSIGNMENT RMS Lusitania table assignment token, 2 3/8 in. wide, made of mother of pearl and engraved: 'R.M.S. LUSITANIA 1 CUNARD LINE'. Fine condition. JULY 20 BOMB PLOT SURVIVORS A wonderful schematic diagram of the conference room at the 'Wolfsschanze', or 'Wolf's Lair' where on July 20, 1944 a bomb was detonated in an attempt to kill Adolf Hitler, the diagram signed by nine German generals, staff officers, and aides who survived the blast. The hand-drawn image, executed on a piece of light cardboard, indicates the place, date, Hitler's location at the large map table, and the location of the bomb placed behind a table leg by Oberst Claus von Stauffenberg. It appears that each signer has signed the piece in the place at which he was located when the bomb exploded. Those signing include: ADOLF HEUSINGER (1897-1982), KARL BODENSCHATZ (1890-1979), KARL JESKO VON PUTTKAMER (1900-1981), ERNST JOHN VON FREYEND (1909-1990), HANS ERICH VOSS (1897-1969), OTTO GUNSCHE (1917-2003), NICOLAS VON BULOW (1907-1983), HERBERT BUCHS (1913-1996), and WALTER WARLIMONT (1894-1976). Lightly toned at margins, else very good. A rare assemblage of signatures.
Italian school; 17th century."Christ washing the feet of the apostles".Oil on canvas.Measurements: 32 x 39,5 cm; 46,5 x 52 cm (frame). It is represented here a scene narrated by the Gospel of John, widely treated in the baroque painting. Christ kneeling before Peter, prepares to wash his feet. The rest of the apostles surround the two figures and exchange impressions, looking stunned by the idea of being washed by their Lord. The figure of Jesus, distinguished from the others by his attitude and the light that seems to emerge from within him, determines the arrangement of the rest of the figures. The architectural space, with bare walls, has a greater presence on the right-hand side of the scene, being configured along a diagonal that allows for greater amplitude in the rest of the scene. The interior is spartan and dark, so that the figures are constructed by the chiselling of light. Stylistically, the work belongs to the Italian school of the Baroque, in which a classicist conception of drawing and pure, emphatic forms stand out.The Gospel of John tells us that during the Last Supper, Jesus rose from the table, took off his cloak and tied a towel around his waist. After pouring water into a basin, he began to wash his disciples' feet. Simon Peter pretended to refuse, but when Jesus insisted that otherwise he could have no part with him, he agreed to have his feet washed. The washing of feet was a common ritual in Eastern culture, in fact, in the Old Testament we find examples of this practice, for example in the visit of the angels to Abraham. Such an action is associated with hospitality, but Jesus' gesture towards his apostles adds a new significant dimension that alludes to humility.
