An Italian carved giltwood silvered and gesso vase, 18th century, of baluster form with twin scrolled side handles, the sides with a band of carved angel masks and flowerheads, later adapted as a table lamp with a moulded stepped square plinth base of serpentine outline, 33cm high.
A late 17th/early 18th century Dutch tortoiseshell veneered ivory and mother of pearl table cabinet, of rectangular form, with top and sides with panels of flowering branches in engraved mother of pearl, having rippled borders, the hinged moulded caddy top with a shallow end drawer, hinged and enclosing a central mirror flanked by two lozenge panels and a lift-out tray, with marbled paper lining beneath, the sides with ring turned ivory mounted tapering cylindrical columns, pierced gilt metal scrollwork escutcheon and key, the spreading concave sided base with a drawer, on shaped bracket feet, 34cm wide x 24cm deep x 23cm high. A brass bound oak cased canteen, retailed by Army & Navy C.S.L., of Old English pattern electroplate flatware, comprising; 24 each tablespoons, table forks, dessert spoons and dessert forks, twelve tea and five egg spoons, two sauce ladles, soup ladle and basting spoon, engraved with a foiled anchor crest and motto Anchor Fast Anchor, two lift out trays, also an oak case of table and cheese knives (qty).
Charles II, Stumpwork mirror frame, third quarter 17th C, worked with central roundel depicting a turreted castle in parkland, above a dog and exotic bird, the corners showing Catherine of Braganza and Charles II, the needlework also includes the lion and unicorn, figure on horseback, large scale rose and tulip and in the lower section a nobleman and lady with central section of three figures feasting at a table. Worked in silk on satin with button hole, knot stitches and couched thread . Cookery.- M. (W.) The Queens Closet Opened. Incomparable Secrets in Physick, Chirurgery, Preserving and Candying, &c., 3 parts in 1, engraved portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria, 8pp. Table of the first part misbound between E4 & 5 of the second, with the final blank, lightly water-stained at beginning and end, some soiling, first part with small marginal tear to fore-margin of I4 touching border, small ink stain to D12 of second part, contemporary ink calculations to verso of engraved portrait and rear endpapers, contemporary calf, a little rubbed, [Wing M101, M94 & Q157], 8vo, for N.Brooke...sold by Charles Harper, 1671.⁂ Each part has its own title comprising: The Queens Cabinet Opened: or, The Pearle of Practice; A Queens Delight, by E.Tyler, and R.Holt, for Nath. Brooke, 1671; The Compleat Cook, by E.Tyler, and R.Holt, for Nath. Brooke, 1671. Despite the imprints varying the work is intended to be bound as one, as indicated by the preliminaries to the first which contains a list of prescribers and approvers of the receipts with the part in which they appear.
China.- Chinese Export School (circa 1830s) A souvenir album with 53 fine original watercolours, including 14 portraits of noble men and women, 17 of flowers, insects and birds, 13 of junks and sailing ships, 8 full-page landscapes, and a single sheet of studies of table stands and furniture, watercolour and bodycolour on various coloured papers, each inscribed in Chinese, some leaves with embossed decoration, each leaf approx. 160 x 100 mm. (6 1/4 x 4 in), with owner's dedication front free endpaper that reads 'Eleanor/ Gould?brough/ from her Bro./ William/ Canton/ May 21.1838', some handling creases and minor surface dirt, contemporary black roan embossed with elaborate decoration of putto playing a harp, splitting to spine, worn, 8vo, [1830s] ⁂ A particularly fine collection of souvenir watercolours. Views include: 'The French and US factories at Canton', 'Canton with 'Tiger's Mouth' (entrance to Canton)', 'Whampoa Reach', and 'Macao Waterfront', with other regional landscapes featuring fishermen.
Fossils.- Woodward (John) Fossils of all kinds, digested into a method, suitable to their mutual relation and affinity; With The Names by which they were known to the Antients, and those by which they are at this Day known, first edition, 7 engraved plates (1 folding), folding letterpress table, with the rare 2 unpaginated ff. of 'Preface' bound between pp.92 and 93, 1p. advertisements at end, endpapers with later ink notes on Woodward and his work, some mostly light foxing, contemporary panelled calf, upper cover detached, taking with it front free endpaper, lower joint cracked, but holding firm, corners worn, rubbed, [Ward & Carozzi 2363], 8vo, Printed for William Innys, at the West-End of St. Paul's, 1728. ⁂ Woodward argued that the surface of the earth was divided into strata and that many of the fossils discovered therein came originally from the sea.Provenance: 'Tho. Top without leaves is made of lots of small planks of wood. Does have scuff and marks through wear and leaves have scratches. Width 45ins, length closed 51ins and each leaf width is 24ins so 123ins fully extended
