AN ARTHUR W. SIMPSON, KENDAL, OAK GATE-LEG TABLE having rectangular top with moulded edge decoration above three frieze drawers, the centre being stamped "A W SIMPSON" to the drawer front, applied paper trade label to underneath reading "Designed and made by Arthur W. Simpson, Kendal, No 827A 13 XII, 189". The substantial single drop leaf having twin gate supports, raised on well defined turned legs terminating in later castors ***Furniture made for the Braithwaite family of Kendal and now in the possession of Jane Wilson who married into that family. Isaac Braithwaite was a wealthy chemical industrialist originally from Hawkshead near Ambleside, but at the time this furniture was made, a leading Quaker in Kendal, he married Mary Snowden Thomas from Baltimore U.S.A. of whom it was said by Hubert Simpson "That no one had ever worn feathers to a Kendal Quaker meeting before she came and that she brought laughter to the meetings which had never dared to smile till then". This table was made for her wedding trousseau and is dated the year of their wedding 1890. 60cm X 130cm X 76cm
