There is also insect damage and scarring in the sky portion of the print for a 40cm length above Table Mountain. An attempt has been made to paint over some of the scarring. The book has been re-cased with a new leather spine Comments: Lieut. James Henry Butt served in the Royal Navy as an officer from 1863 to 1873 rising to the rank of Commander, most of his service being on H.M.S. Sylvia. The beautifully executed watercolours depict Butt`s service in Hong Kong and Japan. The first sketch is an excellent view of Cape Town from Table Bay, obviously painted by Butt while enroute to the Far East. The title page records that Butt presented the collection of sketches to A. H. Phillpotts Esq. Views include Formosa, Canton, Foo-chow, Amoy, Nankin, Kigatsu Hirado, Nagasaki, Yedo and Simoda. (1)
