A Chinese hardwood coffee table, the top inset with blue foliate cloisonné plaques. 83 cm x 46 cm x 33 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cloisonné panels are held in with brass pins. The left hand roundel has small cloisonné surface losses (starting at 12 o'clock and running through to 2 o'clock). There is a small chip to the edge where the securing pin is (situated at 7 o'clock). The remainder of the panel appears to be in good decorative order. The right hand panel has a chip where a securing pin hold the panel in place (7 o'clock). There are further small chips at 10 o'clock again where a securing pin is place. There is a tiny surface chip to the edge of one of the small flowers which frame the central flower (at 11 o'clock). A further chip to the blue ground on the top side of the large flower located at 3 o'clock. This is approximately 4 mm x 2 mm in size. Both panels have surface scratches. The wood table again has surface scratches albeit light and some age splits where the joints are. There is a tiny section missing on the outside of the left hand panel located at 4 o'clock. The top right hand edge has a scuff mark. There are ten scuff marks along the bottom edge of the top. There are numerous white paint spots to the surface of the table which can obviously be easily removed. All the legs have fine hairline splits but none are open.

The moulded edge and frieze is in good condition all around with only minor stress fractures to some of the veneers. There is no lifting veneer. The substantial legs are all in good order, the brass castors are later replacements. The wind out mechanism operates as it should but we do not have the winding key.

The top of the cabinet looks like it has been painted at some time in its life and is a light chocolate brown colour. There are scuff marks throughout the ebonised base with small losses throughout. All in all a rather tired example, but one which works.

The frieze has had a repair to the top left hand corner which should be visible on our images. The moulded edge beneath the frieze has stress fractures but no significantly loose pieces of moulding. All legs are tight at the joints the front right hand leg has a stress mark through the ball of the foot. There is a further stress mark running from the top of the knee down the back inside edge of the leg. The left hand rear leg has stress fractures to the inside edge of the leg running from the knee right down the back of the leg to the rear claw and another one parallel to this but not quite as long. There is no movement. The rear right hand leg has scratches and scuffs to the bottom of the leg and around the foot area. There are replacement corner blocks to the tops of the legs. The table has been through a workshop in fairly recent times and has also had a sympathetic polish. In our opinion this piece will originally have had a marble top. The current mahogany top is clearly made from period timber but, as stated, this will probably originally have had a marble. Table height 78 cm.
