(Lot)Footnotes:John Saunders was originally from London and he volunteered for service with the 1st Madras European Forces in India in 1850. He transferred from the 94th Foot (Connaught Rangers). He was employed from the 14th September until 30th June 1853 as a Private in No1 Company and was present in the 2nd capture of Pegu 21st November 1852, the attack on Pegu on the night of 27th November, the investment of Pegu from 5th to 14th December 1852 and the 2nd investment of Pegu from 4th to 9th January 1853.After the second capture of Pegu, General Goodwin stationed a British force in the City and returned to Rangoon. The force he left was however too small.Major Hill of the Madras Fusiliers, was in command and had two companies of his own regiment, 200 of the 5th Native Infantry, some gunners plus thirty sappers. On the 27th November the Burmese took to the offensive and Major Hill and his men came under heavy attack. Reinforcements were sent for but because of this difficult terrain and stiff enemy resistance were unable to break through. As there were no sandbags, the Pagoda was fortified with barrels of Pork and Biscuits, and 6000-8000 Burmese continually bombarded and assaulted the position.Privates McClory and Kelly of the Madras Fusiliers found an old iron gun and this was brought into action. 2nd Lieutenant S.H.Jones-Parry has described it: 'It was a Bull dog looking thing with a touch hole as large as a handle of a church door. We had an excellent instructor in one Bombardier Sale, as grand an old soldier who ever wore a belt. The men who volunteered to form a gun crew were from No 10 Company and their names as far as I can remember were Liptrot, Vincent, G.Moore, Weir, Saunders, Dunsheath and Dennis Kelly'.The small force under Major Hill were able to hold off the Burmese until General Goodwin arrived with his relief force on 14th December. On 20th December the province of Pegu was annexed.Saunders having been promoted to Sergeant was subsequently present during the Indian Mutiny at the Relief of Lucknow and Lucknow. On the Muster of the 1st January 1861, he is shown as 2847 Sergeant Madras European Veterans aged 39.
