Theodore Major (British, 1908-1999) - 'Old Woman'Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1948 verso, also bears old typed label verso 'The Arts Council of Great Britain, some Lancashire artists exhibition, Theodore Major 23. Old Woman, also bears handwritten presentation inscription from artist to vendors aunt, approx 65x55cm, framed.NB: 1948 Theodore Major was taking art classes for students at The Windmill, Haigh Hall, Wigan, Major noticed a elderly lady watching him paint from her cottage door, by repute this is a portrait of that lady.Provenance: Gifted by artist to the vendors aunt thence by descent.
A fine eight day marquetry longcase clock by Joseph King, Shaftsbury c.1710. The case is profusely inlaid with marquetry flowers and trunk door top shaped in the form of a Dutch gable, tying in with the Dutch style marquetry. The superb dial has very high quality engraving and encompasses strike/silent facility and date aperture. The movement which has five finely turned with decorated pillars rather than the standard four pillars, has recently been restored and is A1 condition. Overall this is an outstanding clock, height 7ft 3 1/2in
