Sir James Thornhill (1675-1734)Great Parlour-door, Pan & Syrinx; Bed Chamber door Nept[une] & IphimediaTwo drawings, pencil and grey wash, ruled brown ink border, ink inscriptions and measurements in borders, sheets 197 x 140 mm (7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in) and 170 x 110 mm (6 3/4 x 4 1/4 in), tipped onto paper supports with old ink attributions to Thornhill in the lower centre, surface dirt, some marginal staining, the first mentioned with small nick in the upper right corner (unframed) (2)Provenance:Christopher Mendez, London⁂ Two original drawings for overdoor paintings from an unknown commission, both depicting stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Croft-Murray does not appear to record a house with these subjects, so presumably for an unrealised project. Another pair of drawings by Thornhill for the same project are held in the Victoria & Albert Museum [see acc. D.3-1891]

Painted floral decoration to the top of the lid with a functioning lock and key, ebonised interior with mechanism under a glazed compartment. Fully serviced by Stephen T. P. Kember Ltd. in Feb 2006 and in working order.33.5cm wide, 19cm deep, 13cm highFull working order and refurbished in 2006. Case also restored with ebonised parts of wood redone. Some losses to the pained decoration on the top. Please see all images. Lock functional with key. No cracks to the case, in good order for the age. The leather tab near the lock is to lift the central glazed door to access the cylinder.
