Rechteckiger Korpus mit wenig vorkragendem geradem Kranz auf gerader profilierter Zarge und Vierkantfüssen. Front mit doppeltürigem Oberteil über zwei Schubladen sowie doppeltürigem Unterteil. Die vier Türfüllungen mit Darstellungen von vier Kaisern zu Pferd vor Stadtansichten. Bezeichnet Nero Augustus, Avi Vitellus Augustus, Tiberius Cesar, Claudius Caes. Eisenbeschläge. 3 Schlüssel.152 × 64 × 190 cm.Kleinere Ergänzungen und Fehlstellen.Der Schrank steht in einer Folge von mehreren französischen Aufbauschränken, welche die Thematik antiker Helden, vielfach der römschen Caesaren sowie anderer Herrscher aufnehmen. Das Thema geht unter anderem zurück auf die in der Zeit starke Rezeption von Suetons Bücher über Leben der Cäsaren (De vita Caesarum), das in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jh. mehrfach in neuen Editionen übersetzt und durch Stichfolgen von Philppe Gall, Nicolas de Bruyn, Hubert Goltzius und andere illustriert wurden. Man darf davon ausgehen, dass auch die Darstellungen der Cäsaren auf diesem Schrank auf Stichvorlagen zurückgehen. (Vgl. Thirion Jacques. *ASCRIBED TO ALAN LOWNDES (1921-1978) 'Olive Branch, St. Ives' bearing signature lower left and dated 1955, titled in pencil verso, with further inscriptions to the reverse of the frame, gouache on paper, 25cm x 31cm. Provenance: The Collection of John Milne, Trewyn, St. Ives. John Milne (1931-1978) was a modernist abstract sculptor who was influenced by the Cornish landscape, and later also the architecture of Greece, Persia and North Africa. Milne was a pupil under Barbara Hepworth, and then worked as her assistant. In 1957 he purchased Trewyn House, a large property in St Ives next door to Hepworth’s studio.

A 19TH CENTURY ANGLO-INDIAN VIZAGAPATAM TORTOISESHELL AND IVORY VENEERED TABLE TOP CABINET the lid opening to fitted lift-out tray, pair of doors to front opening to an arrangement of eight drawers, brass carrying handle to each side and three 'secret' drawers to each side concealed behind sliding vertical upright, 32cm wide 24cm high 22.5cm deep Condition Report : these types of wares inevitably have a few losses, but overall its remarkably intact. There are minor losses to ivory on the sides, and a flake of veneer missing from bottom right on the back. There is a key which opens both locks. The doors are rather bowed, not so obvious when the doors are closed. Probably the biggest issue is the hinges. the left hand door upper hinge has a clean break with one nail holding the door to the hinge, the lower hinge is not attached at all. The interior is really nice, great colour. The secret drawers are a nice feature. Provenance: from a good private estate, we've had a number of good, interesting lots from this source in the last few sales Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting (where possible) any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
