Lot 36

A mid 18c eight day longcase clock, the 12arched brass dial signed Jonathon Beake, Crutched Fryars, London and having a matted dial centre, urn spandrels and silvered chapter ring, seconds and date rings. The five pillar movement was rack striking on a bell but has had its rack, detent and lifting piece removed from the strike side. It is contained in a flat top oak case with walnut crossbanding around the doors and base. The hood has a line of dentil moulding around the top and the quadrants around the dial arch have sound frets. The hood has plain columns attached to the hood door with Corinthian capitals. The trunk has a long door with pointed top and the plain base has a skirting with wavy cut out base. The clock stands 86 tall.

CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is extremely dirty. The polish is tired. The hood is in generally good structural condition. The door is not warped. The lock escutcheon is missing. The trunk door is not warped. The sides are in good order. There are no splits to the base however there are some areas of crossbanding missing at the edges. The foot moulding is missing all the way round. Both sections of return moulding are missing above the arched trunk door on the left and right hand side. We have both weights and pendulum. The metal suspension is broken so we cannot attempt to run the movement. The movement is very dirty but appears to be complete. The face equally is dirty. The seconds hand is missing. There is no catgut.

Lot 1407

A Georgian oak dresser base, with spice drawers, the rectangular top with moulded edge above a series of drawers and cupboards and raised on bracket feet. Width 177 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The handles are Victorian aesthetic design replacements. There are apertures to either end of the spice drawers to accommodate the plate rack which is missing. The backboards are roughly hewn and there is a small 30 cm x 15 cm metal sheet tacked to the base of two, otherwise all are in good order. There are scuff marks throughout through use and wear commensurate with age. The mouldings for the bracket feet are loose. The moulded panel in the right side door is loose and crudely held in place. There are gouges to the interior frame of the right hand door. The top of the dresser has nice patination but is littered with an assortment of dark stains, water stains and ring stains.

Lot 1371

An early Victorian mahogany breakfront wardrobe, with detachable moulded cornice above a pair of panelled cupboard doors enclosing pullout trays with drawers beneath and flanked on either side by a cupboard door opening to hanging space. Width 230 cm, height 203 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The upper internal section of the breakfront has four oak lined sliding drawers. The detachable cornice is in very good condition with only very minor marks. The sides are in good order with no significant issues. The centre doors are not significantly warped and close as they should. We have the lock and key. All trays are present. The drawer fronts have old watermarks and the polish is a little dry. The knob handles are original. The left hand door is not warped. The handle has been moved. There is a mark above the lock escutcheon indicating this. The right hand door similarly has had the handle moved. The plinth base has the usual marks and scuffs that one would expect.

Lot 1224

A mahogany bookcase, with moulded cornice above a pair of arched glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves and raised on bracket feet. Width 110 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Height 130 cm, depth 32 cm, width 110 cm. The bookcase is in generally good order. The top and sides have no splits and no significant marks. The doors close as they should and there is no warping. The bottom left hand door has a broken pane of glass. The bracket feet are later as the bookcase will originally have been the top from a larger piece of furniture.

A George III mahogany breakfront wardrobe, with detachable moulded cornice above a series of cupboards, drawers and dummy drawers, the end cabinets opening full length from the side and all raised on a plinth base. Width 210 cm, depth 67 cm, height 214 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The detachable cornice is in generally good order with no significant scuffs or marks. The left hand door panels both have old stress fractures which should be visible from our images. The door is not warped and opens as it should. The right hand panel is similarly not warped but also has shrinkage stress fractures to both panels. The crossbanded front door panels are all slightly undulating but not loose in the surrounds. There are old stress fractures to all panels. The right hand door has a warp which runs from the lock escutcheon. By the time this reaches the top of the wardrobe it is approximately 1 cm adrift from the centre. We do not have a key however if the door was actually locked shut the warp would be barely visible. All dummy drawer fronts are in good order. The actual drawers are all in good condition also. There are no losses to the cockbeading. The handles are original. The plinth base has the usual marks and scuffs that one would expect. The centre moulded edge between the top and bottom has a return section of moulding missing to the left hand breakfront. There is further damage at the same point on the right hand corner. There are some veneer losses to the crossbanding on the middle frieze. Our saleroom floor is a little uneven and we have not assembled the wardrobe quite correctly.

Lot 967

A late Victorian walnut secretaire bookcase, with detachable pediment above a pair of glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the base with secretaire drawer above a pair of panelled cupboard doors and raised on a plinth base. Width across cornice 124 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The bookcase is in generally good original condition with only minor defects. The detachable cornice has a small loss to the bottom left hand corner below the foliate carving. There is also a further moulding loss on the right had return right at the back near the wall. The sides of the top are in generally good condition. The right hand side has a small 2 cm timber loss at the bottom edge in the centre. This will have been caused by lifting the top on and off the base. The base itself is in generally good order. There is an old stress fracture to the front top left hand corner of the top. There are numerous old marks also. The secretaire drawer is not warped. It operates as it should. The interior is complete. The leather writing surface is serviceable but scratched and scuffed. The panelled doors beneath have old stress fractures to timber joins. The right hand door has a slight warp at the bottom but in our opinion this is not particularly detrimental. The side panels of the base are in good condition. The plinth has significant veneer loss to the left hand return. The right hand side return is also loose with lifting veneer. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1167

A 19th century mahogany drumhead longcase clock, with circular dial and two-train striking movement by William Richardson Drymen. CONDITION REPORT: The hood is showing signs of shrinkage. There is a 23 cm long filled split to the right hand side of the case but this is not detrimental our my opinion. There is a 5 cm filled split to the right hand side of the moulding to the trunk door. There is a scuff mark to the right hand side of the trunk. There are no weights or pendulum with this lot. The moulding to the upper section of the base has had some minor repairs. The dial has scrapes and patches of over varnish missing principally between number 12 & 1 and 5 & 6. The movement looks to have been cleaned in recent years and although the majority of the workings look complete attention is drawn to some vacant holes in the back plate. The workings do require professional renovation.

Lot 1402

An early 19th century oak and mahogany banded longcase clock by Carruthers of Langholm, with two-train striking movement and subsidiary date and second dials, the case raised on bracket feet. CONDITION REPORT: The clock movement is extremely dirty and dusty. The catgut to the going train is now snapped. It weight is applied to the going train the clock does tick. The movement strikes when advanced to the hour. The movement seems to be complete but definitely requires at least a clean if it to run correctly. We have both weights and pendulum. The case is in generally very good condition with no significant faults. Neither door is warped and the feet and plinth are original. The colour of the case is generally good. There will have been some form of pediment between the swans neck necks which is missing.

Lot 1377

A large Victorian crested panel, bearing the arms of Belfast, probably a door pediment but recently used as a bed head, oak with intricate carving. Height 130 cm, width 227 cm (see illustration).

Lot 1345

A Georgian oak longcase clock, with brass dial, 30 hour by Emanuel Burton, Kendal, with weight, no pendulum. Height 203 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is principally complete but in need of restoration. The triangular pediment is loose. The door is not warped. The rear right hand upright at the back of the hood is missing. The trunk door has a stress fracture. The movement is in need of restoration. The seat board is not original. The sides of the trunk are in generally good condition. The base is split and cracked and springing away from the carcass. There are losses to the base. We have the pendulum and weight.

Lot 1398

An Edwardian carved walnut wardrobe, with Japanese influence carved panels, detachable moulded cornice above a single door opening to hanging space and raised on a plinth. Width 132 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Good patination throughout. There are slight shrinkage splits to the left side and a 14 cm age crack to the front right hand side panel. There is a 6.5 cm fine splice missing from the rear side of the pediment. There is a 6 cm splice missing from the bottom right of the base. The interior has very light wear and tear. There is a light blemish at the centre of the frieze. However overall this remains an attractive and serviceable piece of furniture.

Lot 1312

A Victorian walnut breakfront side cabinet, with brass grilles to each door and with Corinthian capitals to the centre pillars. Width 122 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Height 86 cm, depth at sides 34 cm, depth at centre 38 cm, depth of internal shelves 26.5 cm. The condition of the piece is reasonable. The top is flat and a fairly good colour. There are no significant marks or scratches. The main body of the piece is faded at the front in particular. The sides are both a little discoloured and have ink and water stains. There is a stress fracture to the right hand side. There are numerous marks and scuffs to the front and corners and also around the plinth base.

Lot 1299

A pair of rosewood bedside cabinets, with moulded edge, shelf, single door and raised on bun feet. Width 34 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinets are in generally good condition. The right hand cabinet has an old stress fracture to the rosewood top. This runs from the right hand edge for approximately 7 inches. It is not open or raised. The door has a small surface scratch at the top right hand corner. The sides and door are in good condition as are the feet. The left hand cabinet is in extremely good order with no issues at all.

A Globe-Wernicke Company three tier mahogany sectional bookcase. Width 87 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There are light surface marks and scratches throughout. The top has a small 3 cm x 3 cm water stain. There are no signs of woodworm. All glazed doors function as they should. Each glazed door with interior surface scratches. Structurally sound throughout.

Lot 942

A mahogany library/drinks cupboard, with both grille and bookend panels, with one door opening to cupboard space and raised on a plinth, mid 20th century. Diameter 100 cm, height including gallery 87 cm. CONDITION REPORT: A clean and tidy piece of furniture. There are a few minor knocks and nibbles to the base as one would expect. The simulated book spines appear to be in good order throughout although one has a small scratch to the edge. Other than this the piece requires very little attention.

Lot 959

A Victorian mahogany credenza, with centre glazed door enclosing shelves flanked by carved pilasters and with serpentine side doors and all raised on a plinth base. CONDITION REPORT: Length 167 cm, height 89 cm, depth 48.7 cm. This credenza has a two planked polish top the rear section of which has two infills to the left hand side. There is a small polished indent on the right hand side. A few small nibbles to the left hand side pilaster and similar small nibbles to the right hand side pilaster but also a fine 9 cm splice missing from the lower left corner. Otherwise no major faults notable. Key for centre door only.

Lot 1389

A Georgian oak longcase clock, with 30 hour movement, single pointer and date aperture, initialled "IP Asby", with pendulum and weights. Height 195 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The hood is in generally good condition with no serious issues. The capitals to the left hand column are both replacements. The bottom capital to the right hand column is a replacement. Both columns which appear to be yew wood are fairly crude and the left hand column has gouges and losses to the back. The door hinges as it should. The seat board is elevated on blocks and therefore the movement and case may not belong. The trunk door is not significantly warped but does not close correctly. It requires a catch. The sides of the trunk are in good order. The base is in generally good condition. The bottom plinth is old but a later addition. The movement does strike when advanced. We have the weight and pendulum and the clock is ticking but not for any great length of time.

Lot 1081

A George III oak dresser, with Delft rack, the base fitted with a series of drawers and cupboards with brass knob handles and raised on bracket feet. Width 167 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The dresser base is in generally good condition. The colour is reasonably good. The back panels are original. There is no evidence of any woodworm. The brass handles are probably not original but go through the original handle holes. The left hand door escutcheon is partially missing. When the rack is removed there is a single dowel hole to either side. The rack itself is in generally good condition. The only defect is that the cornice return mouldings to the left and right have been removed presumably to fit an alcove. The dresser base is in generally good condition. The colour is reasonably good. The back panels are original. There is no evidence of any woodworm. The brass handles are probably not original but go through the original handle holes. The left hand door escutcheon is partially missing. When the rack is removed there is a single dowel hole to either side. The rack itself is in generally good condition. The only defect is that the cornice return mouldings to the left and right have been removed presumably to fit an alcove. 67 cm wide, 214 cm tall, 49 cm deep. We have both weights and the pendulum but no key.

A Regency/William IV mahogany secretaire bookcase, the top half with inverted breakfront cornice above a pair of glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the base with secretaire drawer above three further graduated drawers with brass drop handles with embossed backplates and flanked by carved and reeded pillars and raised on short lobed feet. Width 125 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The bookcase is in generally good original condition. The cornice is in good order. There are no cracks to the sides of the top. The bottom left hand return moulding to the bookcase top has a 5 cm loss at the rear end by the wall. The doors are in generally good condition. There is a minor insignificant warp to the upper half of the right hand door. The right hand door has one cracked pane of glass. The base is in generally good condition. There are some water marks to the top surface. The secretaire drawer is in good condition generally. There are minor veneer losses to the left hand and right hand top corners just above the drawer itself. The interior is in nice condition with the exception of the writing surface which is tired. A new leather would be advisable. All drawer fronts and cockbeading are in good order. The handles are original. The sides of the base have minor marks and scratches but no significant cracking or other issues. The piece is structurally very sound and all backboards are original. The right hand base return moulding is missing. Height 247 cm, depth 60 cm.

Lot 1085

An antique oak dresser, with moulded cornice, carved frieze and long centre cupboard door flanked on either side by shelves, the base fitted with a series of drawers and cupboard and raised on bracket feet. Width across cornice 138 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Width 129.5cm, height 200cm, depth 52.5cm. There is a 4cm splice of wood missing from the upper left corner of the pediment, there is also a 6cm split directly beneath on the base of the pediment. There are small knocks along the carved frieze with an old gouge mark to the right hand side of the frieze, the right hand corbel has been split and repaired, the finial has also been broken of and glued. Slightly above the corbels on the left and right hand side there what appear to be small hammer marks. The backing is stained plywood. There are three obvious screw holes joining the dresser to the base on the left hand side and two to the right hand side. The dresser top does not fit flush to the base there is a small gap visible. The dresser base itself the top has old ring stain marks the right hand side panel has a full length split and also a small section of the front right hand bracket foot is missing from the side. There is a small hole above the centre middle drawer. All handles have been replaced; infills are visible. The dresser base cupboard door has a full length crack to the centre and an old repair to the right hand side. The bottom right hand drawer is missing a brass drop handle. Other splits and cracks commensurate with age.
