A George III longcase clock, mahogany, with eight day striking movement by Lott Barwise, Cockermouth, with swans neck pediment, arched glazed door, 13 inch dial, long trunk door, quarter column corners and raised on bracket feet. Height 90 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The hood is in extremely good overall condition. There are some minor stress fractures to the veneers between the swans necks pediments but these are minimal and not problematic. There is likely to have been a gilt wheatsheaf or something of that nature between the pediments. This is missing. The hood door is not warped and the glass is original. The trunk door has a very slight warp which is not visible when viewed from the front only from a side angle. The top of the door is proud of the case when closed by approximately 1/2 cm. This tapers to nothing by the time it is parallel with the lock. The lock operates, we have the key. There are minor stress fractures again to the door veneers and base panel veneers. The sides of the case are in good condition all around. The bracket feet which are original are also in good order. The mask around the dial fits very well. The dial itself is as you see in our image. There is some minor overpainting to the small Arabic numerals on the date ring and also to the lettering. The seatboard is clearly original. Whilst the clock cheeks are not of traditional construction it may still be that the case and movement are original to each other. The clock case is clearly of local manufacture (probably Whitehaven). It is contemporary with the dial and movement and has come in from a local private source. We have two weights and the pendulum. The cat gut to the strike train is broken. The clock does however tick. The movement is very dirty but appears to be all present.
