An inlaid mahogany eight-day longcase clock William Lunan, Aberdeen, early 19th century The four-pillar rack and bell striking movement with 12 inch single-sheet silvered brass Roman numeral break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds dial, calendar aperture and signed W'm Lunan, Aberdeen to the centre, the spandrels engraved with the initials W.J. C.G. beneath strike/silent dial and foliate scroll engraved decoration to arch, the swan neck pedimented case with reeded Corinthian pilasters to hood above conch shell centred break-arch long door flanked by quarter columns to trunk, on line bordered plinth base with bracket feet, 217cm high. The initials within the spandrels suggest that this clock was presented as a marriage gift.

A Victorian satinwood and floral marquetry vitrine circa 1890, by Johnson & Appleyards in the Sheraton revival manner, of serpentine form, with an ivorine label for Johnson & Appleyards, Manufacturers, Sheffield, inside the door and another label on the underside h.169cm., w.99cm., d. 42cm Johnson & Appleyards were a highly successful firm of late nineteenth-century cabinetmakers, winning a Gold medal in the Paris exhibition in 1900. Based in Rotherham and Sheffield, the company was founded in 1879, when two local firms, Appleyards and Johnsons, were merged. They grew rapidly, with a workforce of up to 400 producing furniture in both contemporary and revivalist styles. They described themselves as ÒCabinetmakers, Upholsterers, Art Furnishers, Ecclesiastical and Domestic Painters and Decorators, by Special Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales.Ó In 1891 they became a limited company; thus the absence of ÒLtdÓ on the label on the offered lot indicates that this piece was made before then. A full biography of the firm can be found in the journal Regional Furniture 2001, pp.43-63.
A Dutch silver oval snuff box, stamped marks (rubbed), 18th century, the cover inset a martial medallion, the reverse with an inscription “DEZE VEREERT AAN DE ONDER OFFICIERAN EN ROTSGESELLEN VAN HET GROENE VAENDEL, WEGENS DE HONDERDSTE MEY PLANTING, GEDAAN, DEN 1 MEY 1734. DOOR DEN LUITENANT ANTONI GOUZY”, the base engraved with a patera and swags, 9cm (3.5in) wide, 159g (5 oz). The inscription broadly translates as: This honours the underofficers and company members of The Green Vaendel done because of (the foundation?). This was done 1st May 1734 by Lt. Antony Gouzy

A George III oak and mahogany longcase clock, with swan's neck pediment above the arched glazed door flanked by simple pillars enclosing the 13.25ins. arched brass dial by Edward Barlow, Oldham with moon phase, foliate spandrels, silvered chapter ring and subsidiary seconds dial with eight day striking movement, the case with arched crossbanded trunk door flanked by fluted columns and with conforming base raised on bracket feet, height 93ins. This clock has had the movement recently restored at a cost of some £500 (receipt available). (see illustration)
