An Early 18th Century Bracket Alarm Clock By William Webster, London:The ebonised case with bronze handle and finials to top, front door opens to reveal silver chapter ring to the dial with Roman numerals and free floating Fleur de Lis. Surrounded by Arabic numerals for minutes, single winding hole above calendar aperture, centre of the dial with a ring for setting alarm, marked in Arabic. Aperture for pendulum movement, disc to the top WM. Webster Exchange Alley, London and gilt floral mask spandrels. The flanks with silk back fretwork brass.H 48.5cm x W 28cm x D 18cm CONDITION REPORT: Ebonised case, missing front right of door and bottom right at the base, and mitred bracket foot.Dial in good order, with period hands and firmly placed spandrels, single wind. With date aperture, pendulum aperture and alarm dial to the centre.Vented side panels loose, carry handle and finials secure. Rear door has loose beading. Opens to reveal engraved backplate, two hammers to the bell, single train, single fusee movement, with wheel pull. With pendulum. Damage to escape mechanism which is snapped off where it feeds through pendulum stem.

A George III oak longcase clock, 31cm circular enamel dial inscribed Rea, Walton, Roman and subsidiary Arabic numerals, painted with roses, date aperture, 30-hour movement striking on a bell, the hood with stepped cornice, turned columns, shaped rectangular door to waist, bracket feet, 198cm high, c.1800 The Reas were a clockmaking family from Walton-on-Trent, Derbys., this particular clock being the work of the last of the line, Sampson Rea, working from c. 1795 until his death in 1817. He was youngest son of Thomas Rea (1719-1782) to whom he was apprenticed, like his brother John, with whom he worked 1782-1792 signing clocks as Rea & Co., but thereafter, as here, Rea/Walton. He signed clocks from both Sunderland and Darlington and died in 1753. Condition Report: Metal stops to flutes of quarter columns coming slightly loose.
