Roger Dunster is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London circa 1700, Loomes in Vol. 2 lists him moving to Amsterdam in 1722 where he went into partnership with Christopher Clarke (successor to the Fromanteel family) until 1730, he then worked alone until he died in 1747. The fact that the trunk door is veneered in fruitwood beneath the current lacquer work indicates that the case was originally ebonised, the chinoiserie decoration was probably added in the early 19th century.

Mountford, St Albans,' with cast crown and cherub spandrels, the hood with pierced fret frieze and glazed panel sides above a rectangular waist door with glazed lenticle raised on bracket feet, 80in (203.5cm) high.
