An Oak Chiming Eight Day Longcase Clock with Centre Seconds, signed Jonas Barber, Winster, No.78, circa 1750, the case with swan neck pediment, turned columns with gilded capitals, arched trunk door flanked by fluted pilasters, rectangular base with canted corners and upon later feet, 13-inch arched brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, finely matted dial centre and scroll work and engraved figural mask, date aperture, centre seconds, engraved borders, arch with rolling moonphase for lunar scale and tidal indicators, triple weight driven movement with deadbeat escapement, striking the quarters with three hammers striking three bells and a further hammer striking a larger bell for the hours, movement front plate engraved No 78, 214cm high Jonas Barber Jnr (b.c.1718-1802) was one of the finest clockmakers in the North West. Circa 1748 he began numbering his clocks, engraving the serial number on the movement frontplate (and sometimes with the date of manufacture alongside). His clocks can therefore be dated using these numbers. Barber numbered to the mid 1400s until 1800 when his successor (and former journeyman) Henry Philipson continued the system. This clock is illustrated fig 7/10 in Loomes (Brian) Clockmakers of Northern England, pg 83-84. It is sold together with a Clock Magazine dated 1982 in Brian Loomes has written an article about this clock, and a service receipt dated 1981.
