Quare LONDON, with fruit-filled scrolls to top and base, flanked to each side by a winged female caryatid, amongst foliate scrolls, with seven knopped latched pillars, rack strike, with pull-quarter repeat on Tompion's system via double-cocked interconnected blued-steel levers, with pivoted verge escapement and scrolled-foot bell stands, the front plate with chamfered cusp feet to the cocks45cm high PROVENANCEThe late Professor Hans von Bertele (d. 1984), then by direct descent.Previously unpublished and unrecorded, this clock belongs to a group of seven table clocks, each signed and retailed by Quare, but whose movements are likely to have come from either the late Tompion/early Graham workshop, or from the workshop of one of their employees.The movement displays several features that allow this attribution - notably the robust construction, the repeating mechanism with its double-cocked arms on the back-plate, its cusped cocks, and the finishing, which is of the highest standard. The beautifully engraved back-plate, with naked winged female caryatids, is by Graver 195, who has been tentatively identified as Henry Adeane.The group of Quare Tompion clocks are illustrated, described and discussed in Richard Garnier and Jonathan Carter's The Golden Age of English Horology, Masterpieces from the Tom Scott Collection, Winchester 2015, pp. 286-295. There is variance between Tompion's known workshop practice and the group of seven: for instance, the group each have four pinned dial feet, whereas Tompion would use three feet, each latched. On this piece there are four latched dial feet. Another variance is that the dials on the group of seven all incorporate Quare's Indian mask spandrels, whereas this dial does not.These details, together with the fact that Tompion and Graham never used arched dials for their standard two-train striking clocks, all help confirm that Quare provided the dials and cases for these movements.Jeremy Evans has proposed that a possible candidate for this output was James Tunn (see Garnier and Carter, p. 295). He was bound to Ambrose Gardner in the Goldsmith's Company and would have been free around 1689. He was listed close to Quare's Exchange Alley premises in the early 1690s, and it has been suggested that he might have been working for him as a journeyman. In October 1697 he had his own business in Ely Court near Hatton Garden and it is likely he would have been one of the principal clock outworkers supplying Tompion. A clock by Tunn (Sold Christie's, New York, 23 April 1988, lot 35.) is illustrated in Richard Barder The Georgian Bracket Clock, Woodbridge 2001, colour plate 1, p. 50. The similarities between the dial illustrated by Barder, and the dial of the clock being offered here - they are almost identical with fine engraving and fire gilding - strongly suggests that they came from the same - ie Tunn's - workshop.Professor Hans Bertele von Grenadenberg (d.1984) was born in Austria. During the second half of the last century he formed a collection of clocks which comprised the best examples of work from England, France, Switzerland and Austria, amongst others. Highly respected in his field, he wrote prolifically and published learned articles in Antiquarian Horological Journal and The Horological Journal, amongst others. He was also an avid art collector, whilst professionally he was an industrial electrical engineer. His book on chronometers, first published in Munich in 1981, with an English language version published 10 years later, is a standard work. His clock gallery, which was situated above his wine and tobacco shop in the Royal Exchange, would have been well known in the trade. See Jonathan Betts, 'Two Rare Books', Antiquarian Horology, December 2003, pp. 677-9, and subsequent correspondence in the March 2004 issue, pp. 118-9.A letter in the Horological Journal, December 1963, p.383, from Mr. WGA King of Blackheath, concerning three longcase movements and dials he had purchased from a scrap merchant - “... it seems that all were dumped in his yard by a demolition lorry very many months ago and almost certainly came from a house bombed during the last war”. One of the three clocks - a month-going Tompion, is known to have belonged to F.H. Green but he is not known to have owned no.709 (though he did own no.717). It is possible that all three came from his premises in the City.The original case seems likely to have been destroyed during the blitz and the present case, though perfectly correct is style, was found for it during the 1960s.George Graham (b.1673, d.1751) was apprenticed in 1688, entered the Clockmakers' Company in 1695 and was Master in 1722. One of England's greatest makers, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society. From 1696 he was assistant to Thomas Tompion. From 1711-13 he was in partnership with Tompion and succeeded him on his death in 1713. He is buried alongside him in Westminster Abbey.R. Garnier & J. The original is considered a British icon of the 1960s, and its space-saving front-wheel drive layout allowed 80% of the area of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage influenced a generation of car makers. The vehicle is in some ways considered the British equivalent to its German contemporary the Volkswagen Beetle, which enjoyed similar popularity in North America. In 1999 the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century. This distinctive two-door car was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, and was manufactured at the Longbridge and Cowley plants. We are pleased to offer a stunning and late example of this iconic car showing an incredible 4830 genuine miles on the clock. This one owner Mini has had long term ownership and has spent most of its life dry stored and consequently is in remarkable original condition. With rare automatic transmission and relevant documentation this a remarkable find, described by our department as nothing less than a museum piece. This 1000cc City Model was registered on the 11-08-1989 and it sports Immaculate original bodywork finished in Oyster with grey cloth interior, grey carpets and unmarked headlining. Riley's experimentations with a larger engine for their RM resulted in the birth of the RMB. With a top speed now touching 95mph and 0-60 slashed from 25 seconds to 16.5 seconds this really was a very powerful motorcar of its day. With all these changes in what was still a heavy car but, consumption only dropped by three miles per gallon from the smaller 1.5 Litre unit to the new 2.5 unit. Finished in pleasant cream livery, body condition upon inspection reveals no corrosion and brightwork is in fine condition. The interior benefits from professional re-trimming in good quality leather with headlining and door cards also being renewed at some stage. Again mechanically in good order and ready for gentle recommissioning. A very smart and capable post-war sports saloon with great investment potentially, the RMB is rarer, more sought after and consequently not appearing as often on the open market. Sunbeam Rapier Registration Number: GHN 631D First Registered: 01-01-1966 Mileage: 94366 Engine Size: 1725cc Colour: Red Engine Number: B325000214 Chassis Number: BB250002140DHS0 V5C present Announced at the London Motor Show of 1955, the Sunbeam Rapier was the first of a new range of Rootes cars that was to include the Hillman Minx and the Singer Gazelle. A complete departure from the Sunbeam MKIII it replaced, it was a modern-looking two-door, four-seater Coupe with such standard equipment as leather trim and overdrive. The bodies were built by Pressed Steel, shipped to Thrupp & Maberly in London for painting and trimming and then moved to the Rootes plant at Ryton-on-Dunsmore for final assembly. Though initially a little underpowered, the Rapier had inherently excellent handling and was quickly adopted for rallying. Indeed the launch of the Series II version took place at the end of the 1958 Monte Carlo Rally in which Peter Harper's Works Rapier had finished fifth overall. Over its twenty-one year reign, the model progressed through five series, the swansong being the Series V derivative introduced in 1965. Though visually almost identical to its predecessor, it was notable for its larger, five-bearing engine of 1725cc capacity. Just 3,759 Series Vs were built, making it the rarest of all versions of the model. This example on offer is presented in original 'Pippin' red and has been the subject of a light restoration. The interior can only be described as delightful with recently recovered seats in correct Blenheim Black vinyl. Dash and instrumentation are correct with all dials appearing to work well, complete with period radio . The engine has been professionally restored using a replacement engine block, re-bored with new Hepolite pistons fitted, camshaft bearings, crankshaft bearings, timing chain, cam followers and core plugs. The transmission benefits from new centre clutch plate, master and slave cylinder, full oil seal kit and half shaft oil seal kit. The brake system has had a complete overhaul including wheel cylinders, shoes and servo assembly. A fine example of this rare sixties two door coupe in fabulous condition internally and externally and with its powerful 1725cc engine with overdrive performs better than most cars of its era and was subsequently used successfully Europe wide in motorsport events proving itself as an extremely competitive and robust competition entry. Wolseley Model Eight Registration Number: EFU 658 First Registered: 08-12-1947 Engine Size: 918cc Colour: Black Engine Number: 3360 Chassis Number: 308/3336 V5C present Wolseley is a name synonymous with quality pre and post war, and even in their smaller models no expense was spared in luxury and performance. The model eight is a four door, light saloon car which was produced by Wolseley from 1946 to 1948. These cars were only made between 1946 and 1948 (just over 5,300 were made in Birmingham) and they don't come up for sale very often. The engine is 918cc OHV, with a 4-speed gearbox and hydraulic brakes. Apparently, at launch, the Wolseley 8 was priced at £416, £115 more than the equivalent Morris, reflecting the more luxurious nature of the car and the better engine. We are delighted to offer this charming 1947 example in gleaming black paintwork. The car is blessed with a huge amount of originality with its charming leather interior and a large history file. Mechanically sound, with all instrumentation appearing to work properly. The bodywork is in excellent order with gleaming brightwork, engine runs smoothly and brakes are in good order. A fine prewar style car with postwar upgrades making the model eight a very capable classic that will keep up with modern traffic and delight the onlooker. Rolls Royce Corniche Registration number: CX 65 First Registered: 10-07-1972 Engine Size: 6750cc Colour: Gold Engine Number: 12865 Chassis Number: DRH 12865 V5C present First introduced in 1971, the Corniche remained in production for nearly 25 years and is arguably the ultimate 1970s and 1980s status symbol of wealth and success, the Rolls-Royce Corniche was a car sought after by many but one only the fortunate few could afford. The Corniche draws its name from the French and Italian term for a Corniche, a coastal road, especially along the face of a cliff, most notably the Grande Corniche along the French Riviera above the principality of Monaco. Rolls-Royce's final coach built models were entrusted to the company's in-house coachbuilder, Mulliner Park Ward. These two-door cars were hand built in the best traditions of British coachbuilding, using only materials of the finest quality, including Wilton carpeting, Connolly hides and Burr Walnut veneers, a necessarily lengthy process that took all of 20 weeks for the saloon and slightly longer for the more complex convertible. This painstaking attention to detail resulted in a price some 50% higher than the standard Silver Shadows. Offered is an impeccable example of this fantastic motor car finished in gold metallic and unmarked chrome, in original and untouched in every respect, apart from evidence of a professional repaint sometime in its lifetime, showing a genuine 28,000 miles and has evidence of some very interesting and well known previous owners. The term 'time warp' is often misused but sitting in this wonderful vehicle is as close to revisiting 1972 as humanly possible and to make the experience even more authentic she has a working eight track audio system complete with period tapes. On close inspection every panel is as it should be, paintwork is factory standard and unblemished. The hood is in fabulous condition with its mechanism working as it should, door shut is positive and reassuringly precise. The car starts immediately and the haunting Rolls Royce 6.7 litre engine purrs silently. Offered with the car is a valuable registration number CX 65 and with short configuration looks totally correct on a car of this quality and integrity. This stunning Corniche 2 has been fastidiously looked after since it left Crewe in 1972 and remains in the most incredible preserved condition. To many these cars still seem way undervalued compared with some very overrated classics on the market, however Rolls Royce are currently one of the few marques still seeing very healthy price increases year on year. Louis Chevrolet and ousted General Motors founder William C. Durant started the company on November 3, 1911 as the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. Propaganda original vintage poster Look Behind Before Opening Door. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is a British charity that aims to save lives and prevent life-changing injuries which occur as a result of accidents. In the past, it has successfully campaigned on issues of road safety, including playing an integral role in the introduction of drink-drive legislation, the compulsory wearing of seatbelts and the ban on handheld mobile phones while driving, as well as on issues of occupational health and safety. Leonard Cusden is one of the best known and widely respected of British poster artists of the 1940s and ‘50s. During this period he produced hundreds of designs for The Royal Society for The Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) and we have a good collection of these online now here. He was also engaged during the war to work on Propaganda posters and it is thought that he might have designed the original Keep Calm and Carry On poster.
