Lot 1266

A large Victorian mahogany three door library bookcase, with moulded cornice above three glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the base fitted with cupboard doors and plinth. Width 72 ins. CONDITION REPORT: Height 87.5 ins. The piece is in need of some restoration. The cornice is generally in good order with a minor veneer loss to the front right hand corner. The crossbanded frieze below is all present and intact but the veneer is slightly lifting in places. It is not problematic. The three doors are not warped, the left hand door does however have approximately 50% of the moulding around the glazing missing. We do however have the all important left hand half round corner section. The base has the left hand top return moulding completely missing. There is also some resulting veneer damage around the left hand front corner. The left hand side of the base is in good order. The right hand side is generally in good condition although an inch section of the thin return moulding is missing right at the rear by the wall. The left hand base door is missing its lock. The centre door is very slightly warped but not significantly. The right hand door locks as it should. All door fronts are a little tatty. The plinth base is a little scuffed as one would expect.

Lot 1283

A Chinoiserie lacquered three-train grandmother clock. Height 68 ins. CONDITION REPORT: The clock case is in generally very good condition. The hood is in good order with only very minor surface blemishes to some of the relief moulded foliate patterns. There is some minor rubbing to the gilding. There is some minor rubbing to the gilding but no significant issues. The trunk door is in good condition. It is not warped and the pattern and gilding are strong. The left hand side panel has a small rub and loss to one section of the moulded chrysanthemum. The right hand side is in less good condition with more significant losses to the raised gilt chrysanthemum and leaves. The base has minor losses to the gilding above the front and sides. The clock movement is complete but requires a complete clean. It is very dirty and dusty.

Lot 1295

George III oak and mahogany crossbanded housekeepers cupboard, with moulded cornice above three crossbanded, boxwood and ebony strung doors, the centre door enclosing a series of shelves and drawer and those flanking hanging space, the base fitted with two dummy above two actual drawers with brass drop handles, flanked by canted angles and with bracket feet. Width 71 ins, height 79 ins, depth 21 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The cupboard is generally in good order and has a good colour and patination. The cornice is in good condition all round. The doors to the upper section are all in good condition with no significant warping. There are no major losses to the door fronts. There is some minor lifting to the boxwood and ebony stringing on the left hand bottom panel but no losses. There is evidence around each brass drop handle of other additional handles. The repairs here are dowelled and old and barely visible. The sides of the upper section are of good colour and in generally good order with old vertical stress fractures but no significant issues. The base is again generally in very good condition. All drawer fronts are in good order. The handles are obviously later and again there is some evidence of previous handles but one has to look very closely. The sides are in good order as are the bracket feet. The interior of the piece is original as are the backboards.

The cornice is in generally good order although the right hand return is detached. The crossbanded frieze has a front veneer repair . The glazed doors are generally not warped and there is no broken glass. The astragals have had some minor repairs and one or two are loose. There are veneer repairs to both doors which should be visible from our images. The left hand pilaster is damaged at the foot. The base itself has some veneer repair to the top surface and the front right hand corner. The cupboard doors have also had veneer repairs and there is a crack to the right hand door panel. The doors are not warped. There is damage around the left lock escutcheon. The sides of the base have old stress cracks but are in basically good condition.

We do not have the missing handle. The dresser is not in particularly good condition. It has been very well used and has numerous surface scuffs, marks and scratches. There are substantial scuffs along the front edge of the top. The three bottom doors are a little difficult to open and are loose at the hinges. The moulding around the door fronts has shrunk from the panels and sections are a little loose. The drawers themselves all run as they should but are badly scuffed and knocked. The side panels are in generally reasonable condition and the plinth base original. The piece really requires a complete clean and general overall .

Lot 1396

An early 19th century mahogany longcase clock, by George Innes of Glasgow, with circular dial and well figured mahogany case raised on bracket feet. CONDITION REPORT: There is a small section of veneer missing to one of the rounded corners on the pediment. The remainder of the hood is in good order. The trunk door is in good condition and not warped. The base of the clock is similarly in good order. There are some minor scuffs around the bracket feet as one would expect. The movement is reasonably clean and we have the weights and pendulum. We have not had the clock operating as the small metal strip at the top of the pendulum is missing. The clock face is in original condition with strong colours and some minor surface scratches but no significant issues. Both the strike mechanism and going mechanism operate when weight is applied to the pulleys suggesting that with the minor repair to the top of the pendulum the clock is likely to run.

There are also further minor stress cracks across the top of the hood. Other than this the hood is in first class condition. The movement is extremely clean and ticking away. We have the pendulum. The clock appears to be striking as it should . The trunk door is not warped and the sides of the clock and base are all in first class condition. There is no need for any repair or restoration.
