Doctor Who - Holdcourt Ltd - an original vintage c1988 BBC Enterprises TARDIS Telephone Box (with telephone). Wooden construction, with original decals present. Opening door to reveal a telephone which could be mounted within side. Housed within its original box. Tardis measures approx; 39cm tall.
Early 19th Century inlaid mahogany-cased 8-day painted dial longcase clock, circa 1830, with 13-inch break-arched dial (maker illegible), two subsidiary dials and wheat sheaf spandrels, ploughing scene to arch, the case with swan-neck pediment over ebony and boxwood-strung throat over inlaid wavy-topped long trunk door and conforming base, 221cm highDial discoloured, crazed and with rubbing to blacking including subsidiary dials and maker's name. Movement requires overhaul. Case with crack through one swan neck, minor split to hood door, crossbanding loss to base, etc. Backing panels replaced, in two sections. Sold with two weights, pendulum and winder.

A George III pine bow front hanging corner cupboard, the pair of doors with painted scene after Rubens, the head of St John the Baptist presented to Salome, enclosing four shelves, height 93cm, width 63cm.later hinges have been added to the left door (photos uploaded to our website). There is extensive bubbling to the paint work, although this doesn't quite subtract from the ambience of the piece. There is a split to the panelling at the rear of the cupboard. Minor chips and dinks to the edges of the piece, which is consummate of its age and use. There are no obvious signs of any woodworm.

But it was as an art historian and the founder of the Lander Gallery, Truro, that we knew him at Lay's Auctions. His expertise was unrivalled when it came to the Cornish artist John Opie and he was always so generous with his advice, always cautious, always sensible, always kind and supportive. He had schorlarly, yet eclectic tastes and could be a most spirited bidder on objects that appealed to him. We are honoured to be selling some of the wonderful things he collected over the years. An unusual penwork escritoire, early 19th century, with paper label inscribed 'Lady Augusta Gordon's property', the rosewood crossbanded top section fitted with a long drawer, above a leather inset fall front enclosing a gothic interior with a central cupboard door with an oil painting on panel of madonna and child, the penwork scenes of figures in 16th/17th century costumes, the stand with twist supports above an undertier on gadrooned feet, in several sections and possibly a marriage, height 138cm, width 80cm, depth 44cm.Lady Augusta Gordon was a British noblewoman. Born the fourth illegitimate daughter of William IV (then Duke of Clarence) by his long-time mistress Dorothea Jordan, she grew up at their Bushy House residence in Teddington.
