DOYLE, Arthur Conan. Through the Magic Door. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1907. First edition, 8vo (189 x 122mm.) 16 plates. (Occasional light spotting or browning.) Original cloth (discoloured, rebacked with old spine laid down). Provenance: author's presentation copy, inscribed at the head of the title-page 'With Arthur Conan Doyle's kind remembrances Xmas 1907'.
A late 19th Century oak wardrobe cupboard attributed to Liberty & Co, the single mirror panel door headed by a leaded and glazed silk backed and arched cresting, incorporating an opal cabochon, the two side panels carved with art nouveau stylised flower decoration and enclosing hanging space, 38" wide.
Miscellany of items to include Midland Railway Step tread; LMS ceramic 2 pin socket with a brass flip cover stamped 'LMS 54/58373'; LNWR circular C/I Electric Light Controller cover showing On - Off; BR alloy Doorplate states 'B.R. Bank Top'. Was one time in use on an office door at the Darlington loco depot. Measures 15½" x 2 ¾".qty 7 railway company marked Spanners; WH Davies Wagon Plate; Westinghouse Braked alloy triangle sign; Birfield alloy nameplate; BR Lights On - Off alloy sign; Henry Berry Co Leeds England makers plate; British Railways alloy plate; BR (M) circular alloy plate rear marked 'Hedenesford No3 Signalbox demolished 1982'; a few other brass equipment and maker plates. A good assortment well worth viewing.
A late 19th Century rosewood sewing cabinet, twin door opening to two long drawers and a folding writing slope all below sarcophagus hinged lid opening to silk lined compartmental interior, the whole decorated with inlaid foliate mother of pearl decoration and raised on four bun feet, 32cm high, S/D. ILLUSTRATED.
An early 20th Century oak bookcase cabinet, currently in three sections, with a cornice pediment, glazed double doors and a double door cabinet, decorated overall with deeply carved detail depicting foliage and birds, the upper section currently raised to a later stretcher frame. PART ILLUSTRATED.
GABLE CLARK: (1901-1960) American Actor, Academy Award winner. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Gable seated in a half length pose by the door to his dressing room.
