Shaftesbury Election of 1774. The Trial of the Cause on the Action brought by Hans Wintrop Mortimer, Esq; Member for the Borough of Shaftesbury, against Francis Sykes, Esq; for bribary committed at Shaftesbury, previous to the General Election, in October, 1774. Tried by a special jury, on Saturday the 27th of July 1776. At the assize held at Dorchester for the County of Dorset, before The Honourable Sir James Eyre, printed in the year 1776, 19 pages, with a later printed broadside pasted to verso of the title page from Hans Wintrop Mortimer, addressed to the worthy electors of the Borough of Shaftesbury, dated Shaston, 11 June, 1790, proposing himself once more for election (the fourth time), and referring to the 'wicked conduct of my agent', plus the rare uncoloured mezzotint The Shaftsbury Election or the Humours of Punch, published by S. Jackson, 15 July 1775 (BM Satires 5341), separately published but here bound in as frontispiece, creased where previously folded, torn without loss to central vertical fold, and a shorter tear without loss near inner margin (restrengthened with paper to verso), further manuscript ownership annotations to endpapers and blank leaves at front of volume, by J.W. Mortimer and Mark Mortimer, circa 1820s-1850s, contemporary or near-contemporary sprinkled full calf, worn with backstrip partially deficient, 4to (Qty: 1)NOTESA notorious case of election bribery. 'At the election of Sir Thomas Rumbold and Sir Francis Sykes, the two ministerial candidates for Shaftesbury in 1774, several thousand pounds were distributed to the voters at the rate of 20 guineas a man. The mayor and aldermen were entrusted with the distribution and they devised a scheme by which a man disguised as Punch delivered guineas in parcels to electors through a hole in the door. The electors were then taken to another room in the house where 'Punch's Secretary' required him to sign notes for the money received made payable to an imaginary character, 'Glen Bucket'. The defeated candidate, Hans Mortimer, petitioned against the return on the ground of gross and notorious bribery the members and their agents... The House of Commons resolved that Sykes, Rumbold and six members of the Corporation of Shafesbury should be prosecuted for subornation of purgery; a bill was brought in for disfranchising Shaftesbury. These proceedings were eventually shelved, but while they were pending Mortimer brought actions... against Sykes for twenty-six acts of bribary, obtaining a verdict for twenty-two penalties amounting to £11,000.' One of the best-known examples of rigged elections in 'rotten boroughs', partly because the candidates were nabobs, Sir Thomas Rumbold having been Governor of Madras, and consequently a man of enormous wealth.

Dating from 1959, right-hand drive and first UK registered on 25/05/1962 Two-year glass-out, engine-out, floor out restoration 1994/1995 Complete retrim (£1,800) in October 1997. Full engine rebuild (£639) in 1998 Still looks good in Cream with a super red leather interior, fabulous dashboard and original radio A lovely example of a rare car and, when further detailed, would make a good show car NB. On offer from a private collection, this vehicle has not been used for some time. It is a non-runner and is strictly sold as seen. Carl Borgward was a hands-on industrialist, who owned, and micro-managed Hansa, Goliath, Lloyd and Borgward brands in Germany. By the 1950s, they were running fifth in the German sales league, although there were clouds on the horizon, the company becoming insolvent in 1961 having put too much effort into the American market which was having troubles of its own. In truth, Borgward's strategy of constantly introducing new models was causing reliability issues, inefficient tooling usage and market confusion, but that didn't stop the concern making fine cars, which in the case of the Borgward Isabella, competed at the upper end of the market. Their bread and butter models were the Isabella two-door saloon and estate models, but to add some glamour, Borgward introduced the elegant coupé as on offer today. With overtones of Mercedes 190SL in the styling and BMW-influenced engines, they offered strong 80+mph performance from their modest 75bhp 1,493cc engines. There is little early history of this 1959 German coupé apart from some tax discs and MOTs from the early eighties, however, we know that it was first registered in the UK in May 1962. It was acquired in August 1993 by Tony Hunt of Tipton who had been looking for one for some months. There is a small article in Practical Classics Magazine (Jan 1996) telling the story of his two-year glass-out, engine-out, floor out restoration of 772 ELC and a number of photographs including some taken presumably at the end with the car looking very smart on a show stand. There is an MOT on file dated May 1996 at a mileage (km?) of 52,640. 772 ELC was subsequently purchased on 15/02/1997 by David Palmer from Oxford who owned it until 29/11/2009 and judging by the amount of invoices in the file that relate to immediately after his purchase, he was not too impressed with the restoration. Too much work to list here but the important bits are a complete retrim by Minns of Oxford in October 1997 (£1,800) and an engine rebuild (rebore, new pistons, crank regrind, new mains, big ends, small ends) £639 in June 1998. The Isabella has been part of a collection since 2014 but, pleasingly, has remained in decent condition. As well as all the invoices, MOTs photographs etc. it's supplied with the original 'Operating Instructions' in English. Launched in 1966 as a two-door version of the Silver Shadow, the coachbuilt Mulliner Park Ward Coupe was a superior car to the saloon on which it was based. With fabulously elegant coachwork designed by Bill Allen, each and every one was handbuilt by MPW in a necessarily lengthy process that took all of 20 weeks and resulted in a price some 50% higher than the standard Silver Shadow. Only the very finest materials were used with different seats and dash to the Shadow, engine power went up by 10% and tweaks to the suspension and steering geometry gave an even better ride. Demand for these magnificent cars was so great that the waiting list was measured in years, not months, a state of affairs that resulted in them being given their own model name, Corniche, in March 1971. The Corniche was progressively developed over time, gaining features like split-level air conditioning, rack-and-pinion steering, Bosch fuel-injection and self-levelling rear suspension. Reassuringly exclusive, only 1,108 Coupes were made before production ceased at the end of 1981, though a convertible version continued as the flagship model in the Rolls-Royce range until 1996. Finished in Burgundy, this example appears straight with a good depth of finish. Attractive Corniche interior is slightly scruffy and the Ox Blood leather is well-patinated and could do with a leather feed. 77,632 miles are indicated however there is no paperwork with the car so this cannot be corroborated. It's believed to run and turns over freely but will need a battery and fresh fuel. Great basis for a refresh or just use as is. A good looking, two-door saloon attractively finished in medium grey over light grey Appears to be an original right-hand drive car. Borgward's new Isabella range was released in 1954 as a replacement for the Hansa, employing monocoque construction and sold in a number of different guises, including a two-door saloon, coupe, cabriolet and estate (Combi). With elegant Trans-Atlantic styling and plenty of chrome, the Isabella was a handsome alternative to Opel and Ford, neatly bridging the gap to more expensive offerings from Mercedes-Benz. Under the bonnet, Borgward's compact four-cylinder engine was mated to a four-speed, all-synchromesh gearbox via a hydraulic clutch, using a column-change lever typical for cars of the period. The standard engine's output was 60 horsepower but a more powerful 75 horsepower unit (known as the TS and using two Solex twin-choke carburettors) was used in the cabriolet and later found its way into the saloon. With independent suspension using a swing axle at the rear, the Isabella handled well and proved a willing performer, with excellent road manners. The Isabella's bespoke cabin was nicely appointed, with plenty of space for four adults to travel in comfort, the padded dashboard and large steering wheel both typically Germanic features. The Isabella remained in production until 1962, but Borgward was sadly in receivership and no replacement was forthcoming. In total some 202,862 Isabellas of all types were made over an eight-year period, making it commercially successful although few survivors remain on the road today. With a strong following around the world and plenty of support from the owner's club in the UK, the Isabella is an interesting alternative to other makes of the era. Manufactured by Citroën between 1961 and 1978, the Ami 6 was a supermini and for several years was the best-selling car in the French home market. When the company eventually decided to replace it, a total of 1,840,396 units had been sold globally. It was often called the Citroën 3CV (Three Horses), as the engine size of 602cc was a little bit larger than the upper limit of the 2CV taxation class, and was offered as either a four-door saloon, four-door estate, or a two-door van. The early models were thrust forward by a 602cc air-cooled twin, not generating too much 'G-force' which was probably just as well given that the front seats easily unclipped and could be used as picnic chairs. The Ami 6, along with the Ford Taurus, were the first vehicles fitted with rectangular headlights, an innovative design that went against the view that all headlights had to be circular. Despite having dramatic modern styling, the initial sales were as slow as the car (0-50mph in just over half a minute) as it was judged to be too expensive, however, things quickly picked up and it was ultimately much loved. Will have a fluid levels check, road test and MOT prior to being offered for sale A decade after the Jaguar E-Type arrived, the design progressively matured through various developments until 1971 when the Series 3 was introduced. Designed to showcase the new smooth and torquey 5.3-litre engine, originally developed for Le Mans, the Series 3 cars were available as a 'Roadster' (convertible) or a '2+2' Coupé. These later cars are easily distinguished from their six-cylinder predecessors by the large cross-slatted front grille, flared wheel arches, wider tyres, a pronounced bonnet bulge, updated bumpers, four exhaust tips and a badge on the rear that proclaims it to be a V12. The interior was entirely new in the V12, with more comfortable seating, stylish new door panels and a smaller, dished and leather-rimmed steering wheel. Being slightly larger and altogether much softer in nature, the E-Type in Series 3 form had lost the wildness of its youth but gained the long-legged touring profile, to which it was arguably better suited. Approximately 7,990 Series 3 Roadsters were sold worldwide before production ceased in 1975. We are pleased to offer this original 1973 UK-supplied, right-hand drive, automatic E-Type Series 3 Roadster which, according to its Jaguar Heritage Certificate, was built on 23/10/73, finished in Azure Blue with a Dark Blue interior and dispatched to Lex Motors of Chelmsford on 6/11/73. Possibly the best-looking R230 in the world AMG, the official performance division of Mercedes-Benz, has a long history of producing high-performance derivatives of Mercedes' standard production vehicles, and these improved versions enjoy an enthusiastic following worldwide. When the stunning SL55AMG was introduced in 2003 with its 5.4-litre V8 producing 476 BHP and a tree stump pulling 520lbs/ feet of torque it was naturally assumed it would remain top of the range, however, AMG had a further party-trick. At a time when really fast four-door saloons were the preserve of BMW and Mercedes, this Vauxhall (Opel) derived 'super-saloon' arrived on the scene demolishing the opposition. Oddly, it wasn't its huge performance or masculine good looks that created the most fuss, but the fact that the Daily Mail was so outraged by its stated top speed of 176mph, that it declared it too fast for British roads. Of course, the Lotus Carlton - or Type 104 to Lotus aficionados - was nothing of the sort, and although it shared its major components with a mainstream executive car, its level of development across every aspect of automotive dynamics had resulted in a truly special performance car. It was powered by a twin-turbo version of the venerable straight-six used in the range-topping Senator, which developed a remarkable 377bhp. To achieve that figure, Lotus had put a lot of work into the 3.6-litre power unit, uprating and strengthening the bottom end, porting the 24-valve cylinder head (from the Carlton GSI), and fitting forged 'slipper' pistons made by Mahle atop new Lotus-designed connecting rods tied to a counterweighted, forged steel crankshaft. The gearbox was the same six-speeder used in the Corvette ZR-1, the only transmission in GM's parts bin, capable of handling the car's monster torque. AP 'Group C' derived brakes - four-pot calipers with 330mm ventilated discs at the front and two-pot at the rear - sat behind specially developed Goodyear tyres. Performance was brisk, to say the least. 0-60mph came up in 5.0 seconds, 0-100 was dispatched in 11.1 seconds and in 1992, Autocar Magazine recorded a time of 17.0 seconds for their 0-100-0 challenge, 2nd best behind an F40, however, it's the car's maximum speed of 176mph that will always be quoted by its fans. Lotus Carlton (SCC0000019N1231798) was 'Signed from Production' on 23/06/1992 and granted Limited Edition Number 0811G. In common with every other Carlton, it was finished in Imperial Green pearlescent with Anthracite Connolly leather and despatched to Frosts (Cars) Ltd. in Shoreham-by-Sea who registered the car (K909 MFG) to its first owner on 14/01/93. Within the History File is the Lotus Carlton Maintenance Programme (Service Book) which contains a stamped Pre-delivery Inspection by Frosts which is followed by a 1,000-mile service on 21/1/1993 at 851 miles and a 'First Main Service' on 2/8/1993 at 9,095 miles. Frosts carried out the car's 2nd Main Service in early 1994 and on 13/05/94, '811' was registered to Brian McMullan in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone, NI. The following three services were carried out by Vauxhall Dealers (Carlton specialists) 'Savilles Auto Village' in Lisburn with the latest of these being on 15/04/96 at 43,547 miles. It returned to England and was registered to Paul Nevill of Knebworth as K33 NEV on 26/07/96 and he enjoyed ownership of '811' until very recently. In March 2006, cherished registration K33 NEV was replaced with K909 MFG. Frosts of Shoreham returned to servicing the vehicle and carried out the next four services culminating with the 8th Main Service on 11/11/98 at 78,068 miles. Mr Nevill was obviously particularly fastidious as between early 1997 and January 2006 there are a total of 19 invoices from marque specialists for servicing, minor repairs and ongoing maintenance amounting to £14,995. The mileage at the most recent (27/01/2006) was 98,595 and the odometer reads 99,392 now so the car has covered less than 800 miles in the last 14 years having mainly been on SORN. In February 2019, '811' was refreshed by GB Autos of Colney with a bill for £1,652 and there is a very recent account (4/03/2020) from Saxon in Neath for £120 that relates to an oil and filter change. The current MOT is valid until 25/01/2021. It's obvious that this Carlton has been totally cherished, the Imperial Green paintwork retains a deep shine and the ruched Anthracite leather looks almost unmarked. The five-spoke alloys are excellent, the engine bay is very tidy and well detailed and the dashboard is crisp with bright instruments and 'LE 811' proudly displayed on the glovebox lid. The car is accompanied by its Owner's File with older MOTs, SORN documents, V5Cs, the Lotus 'Certificate of Vehicle Provenance', the aforementioned invoices, the bespoke green leather Lotus Carlton book pack with the service record and a spare set of keys. One of only 64 UK-built, right-hand drive cars and one of only 18 with the Getrag 5-speed manual box Classic Alpina bodywork with deep front splitter, boot lid spoiler, 16" Alpina wheels and 'Deco Set' graphics 135,000 miles. E28 six-cylinder engines are known for their longevity. Excellent history, service records etc Sounds and looks superb and at this guide price, combined with rock star provenance, this is a rare opportunity This is one of 500 B9 3.5s (E28) built between 1981 and 1985 of which just 64 are understood to have been right-hand drive examples. Of the 64, 46 were supplied with ZF automatic transmission, with only 18 (including this car) being optioned with the far more desirable Getrag five-speed manual gearbox. Costing almost twice that of the BMW 528i SE (E28) on which it was based, the B9 3.5 offered huge power and performance increases over the standard car. Manual transmission B9 3.5s were easily the fastest saloon cars of their day. According to Autocar, 0-60mph required just 6.3 seconds and top speed was 153mph putting the E28-based Alpina on a par with Porsche's then-current 911. Left-hand drive examples were built by Alpina at Buchloe while right-hand drive production took place at Sytner in Nottingham. Cars destined for transformation were supplied by BMW with certain modifications already in place and then further enhanced with a long list of Alpina upgrades. The B9 engine had been developed from the unit used in BMW's 635 and 735 variants. Uprated by Alpina with a gas-flowed cylinder head featuring hemispherical combustion chambers, bigger inlet valves and a gas-flowed inlet manifold, a 268-degree high-lift camshaft and balanced pistons enabled compression to rise from 9.3 to 10.2:1. Combined with revised fuel injection settings, a reprogrammed Bosch Motronic engine management system and Alpina twin-pipe exhaust system, the net result was a conservatively rated 245bhp at 5700rpm. The standard ZF automatic gearbox was retained (a Getrag 5-speed manual box was an option) and those cars destined to become B9s always came with a BMW-fitted 25% limited-slip differential that was further uprated with an Alpina-installed oil cooler. Suspension modifications saw progressive-rate coil springs and adjustable gas-filled Bilstein dampers fitted although the original front and rear anti-roll bars stayed. New Alpina 16-inch wheels measured 7-inches wide at the front and 8 at the rear (requiring a small modification to the rear wheel arch), these light alloy rims originally being shod with Pirelli P7 tyres. Cosmetically the exterior was enhanced by Alpina's deep front spoiler, a rubber boot lid spoiler and body-coloured door mirrors, the eye-catching Deco stripe kit being an optional extra. Early examples were supplied with an amazing interior, the figure-hugging Scheel bucket seats being upholstered in Alpina's trademark grey fabric with blue and yellow stripes. Other bespoke features included an Alpina leather-rimmed four-spoke steering wheel, Alpina instrumentation, Alpina wooden gearknob and numbered dash plaque. Offered here is a beautiful B9 3.5 Alpina that for the last 9 years has formed part of a significant collection belonging to rock legend Jay Kay. First registered on 27th October 1983, this rare UK-delivered right-hand drive example is believed to be one of just 18 B9s with a manual gearbox. 64 right-hand drive cars in total were upgraded by Sytner in Nottingham (Alpina's UK partner) to this specification most of which had been delivered from BMW with an automatic transmission. Indicating 134,756 miles at the time of cataloguing 'A853 FRA' presents very well, the black paintwork retains a deep gloss and the Alpina clothed Scheel sports seats are superb. Accompanying the car is the original book-pack and a substantial history file containing a wealth of old MOTs, invoices dating back to the mid-80s and some correspondence between the previous owner and Jay Kay, both clearly BMW enthusiasts. It appears that shortly after purchasing the B9, Jay Kay instructed a thorough inspection from a marque specialist with all areas requiring attention to be taken care of. Pleasingly, a customer copy of an invoice for the purchase of this car from Sytner of Nottingham can also be discovered in the file, dated 1st September 1986, and this invoice clearly shows the full Alpina B9 specification leaving little doubt on the authenticity of this particular Alpina. Having been well maintained over the years and carefully selected for a good reason to form part of a diverse and interesting collection of motorcars, this is an opportunity to take ownership of this truly superb super saloon from the 1980s. The 944 Turbo Cabriolet combined the Turbo S' 250bhp engine with the strengthened cabriolet body built by ASC at Weinsberg Only 625 were built, with just 100 examples produced in right-hand drive for the UK, Japanese, Australian and South African markets Classically finished in Guards Red with a Classic Grey (TT) leather interior and grey carpets throughout Original and fully stamped Porsche Service Book plus numerous invoices for maintenance and previous MOT Certificates, helping support the indicated mileage Factory stickers still in situ, two sets of keys and a complete book-pack suggest careful ownership This is a simply lovely example of one of the rarest and most sought-after Porsches from the 1990s Following the international success of their nimble 924, Porsche designed an all-alloy, 2.5-litre inline-four for their new 944 which they planned to introduce in 1982. Their talented engineers were able to produce a very smooth running four-cylinder engine by utilising two counter-rotating balance shafts running at twice engine speed. These carry eccentric weights which produce inertial forces that balance out the unbalanced secondary forces, all a bit technical but the result is a large four-cylinder engine that feels as turbine-smooth as a six. Cosmetically, the 944's bodywork was revised with wider wheel arches (similar to that of the 924 Carrera GT), a fresh interior and upgrades to the brakes and suspension. With greater visual presence and the performance to match, better handling, stopping power and more creature comforts, the 944 was a natural step forward. A 'turbo' version of the 944 was always on the cards, and the forced induction boosted the 2.5-litre engine by a healthy 60bhp, necessitating an upgraded clutch and gearbox. The chassis was further developed and thicker anti-roll bars and four-pot brake calipers were fitted to deal with the significantly increased performance. Externally, a smoother nose panel and a larger rear spoiler distinguished it from its lesser siblings. In February 1991, the final year of 944 production, Porsche released the 944 Turbo Cabriolet which combined the Turbo S' 250bhp engine with the strengthened cabriolet body built by the ASC-American Sunroof Company at Weinsberg. Compared to the Coupé the Cabriolet's windscreen is lowered about 6cm and raked back to reduce the wind noise when the top is down. Porsche initially announced that 600 would be made, but ultimately 625 were built, with just 100 examples produced in right-hand drive for the UK, Japanese, Australian and South African markets. These are rare cars, produced for just one year, with only 32 examples believed to still reside in the UK. Presented here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive, 944 Turbo Cabriolet supplied new by Porsche Centre-Strattons of Wilmslow Ltd. on the 1st August 1992. Finished in the ageless Porsche colour combination of Guards Red with a Classic Grey (TT) leather interior and grey carpets throughout, this car is in superb condition and has today covered just 50,000 miles (approx.). It was supplied with options 220: a limited-slip differential with 40% lockup with reinforced inner plates and molybdenum coated differential shafts (as standard), 233: tyre specification, 573: air-conditioning, 605: headlight aim control and 946: leather/ leatherette seats. It was serviced by Porsche Centres (Strattons, Chariots, AFN) from 2,789 miles to 19,968 miles, and latterly by marque specialists.
