This oil on board by Sam Newton, one of the Florida Highwaymen, depicts a moody Florida summer's evening with palm trees and a soft landscape w a stream going down the center. Sam Newton is known for having a "dreamlike" talent and this painting exhibits that perfectly. It is signed in the lower right. Newton is one of the twenty-six original African American artists who became known as the Florida Highwaymen. His brother, Harold Newton was also one of the Highwaymen artists and taught Sam his artistic skills. They all lived in the Fort Pierce area of Florida and taught themselves how to paint, and were forced to sell their paintings from the trunks of their cars in the 1950's and '60's because of segregation and discrimination. They sold their paintings along U.S. Highway 1 in Florida for as little a $10 apiece, just to escape the orange groves and fields where they were forced to work because of the color of their skin. They sold their paintings like this too because galleries wouldn't allow them inside. Sometimes they would go door to door selling their paintings just to survive. People didn't realize the importance of these paintings at the time, and when their work was rediscovered in the 1990's, well, today the paintings are recognized as the work of American folk artists. In the manner of Thomas Smythe (1825-1906) – a 19th century sketchbook bound in gilt tooled boards containing 48 pasted-down pen and ink sketches depicting typical Smythe scenes, including depictions of Punch & Judy shows, travellers in East Anglian landscapes, organ grinders performing with their monkey, agricultural workers, Gypsy encampments, horses feeding, door-to-door vendors, fisherfolk etc, mostly numbered to the corners (but not in order), a couple of the sketches more resemble works by brother Edward Robert Smythe, no inscriptions or dates, the gilt edged pages not all used and showing signs of sketch removal, many pages have been cut out, sketches approx. 23 x 20cm, sketchbook 28 x 38cmView every page here.Note: Most of the sketches bear striking resemblances to known Smythe paintings and include many of the same motifs, however nothing further is known about them and the sketchbook was acquired at auction without attribution or provenance.
J Taylor of Liverpool - an early 19th century mahogany longcase clock, the hood having vere eglise painted glass frieze and double fluted pilasters, flanking a 14" painted arch dial, signed to the centre, with Roman and Arabic numerals and Arabic outer date dial, the arch with rolling moonphase, the eight day weight driven four pillar movement striking on a bell, the case having raised panelled door flanked by quarter turned fluted pilasters to a boxbase, on ogee bracket feet, h.237cmCondition report: With weights, brass faced pendulum and door key.Case, dial, movement and seatboard all appear original.Movement has been cleaned at some point.Movement currently screwed down.Time works but strike is intermittent.Case with shrinkage split to box base, otherwise generally good with minor age/handling wear only.

Norman of Pimlico - a mid-19th century walnut cased bracket clock, the case having glass panel to top, signed silvered dial with single winding hole for an eight day wire driven fusee movement with anchor escapement, glazed back door and ebony moulded cornice, h.30cmCondition report: Dial badly scuffed and with noticable wear around winding hole.Ebony cornice moulding to left side is missing.Case with shrinkage split as made in two sections above dial at 12 o'clock.Two veneer losses to base at back, and losses around upper left corner of door.Otherwise case appears all original and unpolished.Clock in running order.Movement appears good and all original, including mounting brackets.All glass good.
John Dowson of London - a George III walnut cased bracket clock, having a caddy top over arched brass dial with strike/silent dial to the arch, the silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, visible pendulum, silvered date aperture, the matted centre with silvered tablet signed John Dowson London, twin winding holes for a brass eight day wire driven fusee movement striking on a bell, the backplate with all-over scroll leaf engraved decoration, the case marquetry inlaid with swags and ribbons, having glazed sides and back, h.45cm (handle down)Condition report: Clock runs and strike is working.Case generally good.Moulding strip to back door is loose.The whole a slightly ‘cleaned back’ appearance.Dial and movement fit case well and appear original.Some unexplained holes to top of backplate.Probably converted from verge to anchor escapement.

A late 18th century mahogany writing bureau; the angular cleated fall opening to reveal fitted interior with a central cupboard door, varying sized drawers and pigeon-holes etc., further over four full-width graduated drawers with moulded edges, raised on high bracket feet (100cm wide x 54cm deep x 107cm high)
A 19th century French elm armoire of slim proportions; single panelled door opening to reveal a shelf and hanging space, raised on stile feet (80cm wide x 43cm deep x 194cm high)The piece appears to be of a good colour; it has 'suffered' with a lot of historic woodworm to the front panels but this has mostly been filled with polish and polished out; where the panels make up the sides the shrinkage across the grain is parting the panel and there is a bit of woodworm to the rear left-hand stile about 21/2 ft up manifesting itself into 11/2/2" oval areas where the woodworm has eaten the wood away; the cabinet is also noted to be leaning slightly to the left, upon opening the door there is a shelf and hanging space which looks pretty dry but in need of a clean etc.; the moulding at the bottom appears original and in good order and the stile feet also appear original and in good order. The Auctioneer reports that the item could be made much better and restored to a good standard for a reasonably non-expensive cost.
