Peter Waals (1870-1937) Man's dressing table oak seven shaped drawers flanking cupboard door on stepped feet 91.5cm high, 122cm across. Literature: The Furniture and Joinery of Peter Waals, The Alcuin Press, Chipping Campden, 1930, no.9 for a similar example with brass handles. Provenance: Arthur Mitchell; thence by descent.
Victorian figured walnut music cabinet. Top with brass rod gallery, quartered veneered and inlaid with whitewood string. Glazed single door flanked by columns, interior with various shelves and single drawer. Labelled William Wood, 12 King Street, South Shields cabinet maker. 63cm (25in) wide. Woods were established in South Shields for 127 years, closing its doors in 2001. In the late 19th century Woods earned its reputation as high class cabinet makers in Kings Street, later becoming known as Drapers, Hosiers and Haberdashers. Edwardian rosewood veneered display cabinet, mirrored back with canopied drop centre above one drawer and two cupboards, flanked by two single door display cupboards, decorated all over with classical satinwood inlays. 152cm (60in) wide. Beckford (William).- Britton (John) Graphical and Literary Illustrations of Fonthill Abbey, half-title, engraved frontispiece, additional pictorial title, title vignette and 9 plates (2 hand-coloured), list of subscribers, 4pp. advertisements, manuscript invoice for work performed at the Abbey loosely inserted, some spotting or foxing, original boards, original printed labels, rebacked in grey cloth, some browning and damp-staining, corners bumped, rubbed, 4to, 1823. ⁂ The invoice is made out to William Beckford and relates to work performed by H.S.Westmacott (likely Henry Westmacott, 1784-1861, sculptor and brother of Sir Richard Westmacott), listing services such as "Modelling interlacing flowers for groin over door way, Great Octagon, £3,3/" and "Carving dormer in Great Octagon, £42", the total for the invoice comes to £208, 5 shillings.
