BURRELL PAUL: (1958- ) Former servant of the British Royal Household, Footman to Queen Elizabeth II and later Butler to Diana, Princess of Wales. Selection of A.Ls.S., Paul (and one Much love, P'), thirteen pages (total), 4to and 8vo, various places (mainly London), 5th June - 11th November 1982, to Michael Hillard, ('My dear Michael'), most on the printed stationery of either Buckingham Palace or Balmoral Castle. Burrell writes a series of social letters to his friend, some with interesting content, in part, 'As I sit here at my desk, listening to the band of the Grenadier Guards play beneath my bedroom window, I wonder where you are and what you might be doing. It would be so nice to have you in town for my birthday tomorrow...I just had the most horrific shock! The lovely letter which you wrote me from Abu Dhabi had been packed with my livery for next weeks Reagan visit at Windsor. Thank goodness my hat boxes and wardrobe trunks are still outside my door and are not being trundled to Windsor by the Army!....I had a super day at the Derby on the 2nd with the Queen - even though we had thunderstorms during luncheon....the rain stopped in time for Lilibet and Mummy to squelch their way down to the paddock to see the horses. Today, Saturday, is a beautiful warm sunny day, so after I have been "pumping", I'm off on the roof for a few hours of "bronzy bronzy". It won't be any match for your tan though' (Buckingham Palace, 5th June 1982), 'I have been having a super birthday party and "several" wonderful surprises!!....Lunch was for 4, which included your little friend "Scooby Doo" - isn't he lovely?? Such a shame he had to leave to meet some previously arranged "date". Ah well!.....The flowers are so beautiful - I don't want them to die!!....They're all in a beautiful bouquet - with a huge bow and fishtails! Thank you Michael - you're so thoughtful! I'm leaving here tonight to travel to Windsor. How on earth can I carry my flowers past the guards!! I must get Penny - our florist to arrange them nicely for me. The Queen would be green if she saw them!' (Ealing, 6th June 1982), 'Last nights "fancy dress", judged by "Ed & Sarah" was a great success - Diana's dresser et "moi" came 2nd - dressed as clowns. Sarah informed me that she chose the 2nd - Ed, of course chose the 1st! One wonders whether she favoured "moi"....Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday afternoon - we'll have a good chat under the dryer!' (Balmoral Castle, 31st August 1982), 'It was good to be back with ones very best and only friends, after what seems like an eternity away in far flung corners of the empire....Enclosed are your tickets for the viewing of "Beatrix the Bolds" arrival at Buckingham Palace. I do hope that Bo can make it....She will go "Ga-Ga" like poor old Wallis in the Bois de Boulogne and turn into a vegetable.' (Buckingham Palace, 11th November 1982). Two of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes hand addressed by Burrell. G (1), otherwise VG, 5
