W TOMLINSON, LONDON; a late 17th/early 18th century eight day longcase clock with seaweed marquetry inlaid case, the 12" brass dial with silvered chapter ring bearing Roman and Arabic numerals, with further subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, above an intricately inlaid case with a bull's-eye lens and raised on a plinth base, height 237cm. The capitals themselves have been re-gilded. The return mouldings where the hood sits on the base are split and the left hand side is slightly loose. There are some old repairs to the marquetry to the door, flecks of veneer missing and some old repairs to the sides of the case. The lower portion of the plinth base has clearly been restored and repaired, the stepped section at the bottom is a later addition and it appears at some stage that the plinth has been damaged and therefore repaired. Gilding around the bull's-eye lens has been re-painted, but overall a good original clock from a good private source, presented in unrestored condition. The upper right corner applied spandrel to the dial has a small area of loss to the lower portion of the right hand cherub. Sold with two weights and a pendulum. Cannot confirm working order
